Francois R. Velde...
When was Prince Louis of Battenberg naturalized? The Oxford DNB entry
suggests that it was in the 1860s ("The friendship between his mother
and Princess Alice [...] led to Prince Louis's settling in England as a
boy. He was naturalized as a British subject, and entered the Royal Navy
as a cadet in 1868") much as does his obituary in the Times.

Yet an entry in the National Archives catalogue is titled:
"HO 144/594/B16148 Nationality and Naturalisation: Battenberg,
Louis Alexander, Prince of. Certificate B321 issued 18 January 1909."

CJ Buyers...
Not sure what HO144 is meant to be, but the copies of the certificates
of naturalisation for 1844-1873 are supposed to be in Close Rolls
series C 54.

CJ Buyers...
Surely then the file refers to the issue of a certificate and not
necessarily the naturalisation itself.

One assumes that the Act of Naturalisation itself will be listed in the
London Gazette of 1968 or 1969.

Dag T. Hoelseth...
Or rather *1868* or *1869* ... :-)

CJ Buyers...
Very true indeed!

Francois R. Velde...
No such act is listed in

CJ Buyers...
Well, then perhaps the means used wasn't an Act of Parliament but
denization, which only required Letters Patent. I know the process was
still allowed in the 1870 Act, so probably still operated at the time.
Again, the London Gazette for 1868 or 1869 should provide the answer.
