Who preceded the Duke of Edinburgh as Ranger of Windsor Great Park? Is the
position usually occupied by a member of the Royal Family?

I assume HRH doesn't patrol the park telling campers to put out their
campfires and not to feed the bears, but out of curiosity are there any
traditional duties, however nominal or ceremonial, associated with this
position? If not, have there ever been?

Or, as the question occurred to me, why Ranger and not Parker?

I raised the initial question because I recently saw a documentary ("Windsor: A
Royal Year") in which the Duke gave a tour of the Great Park in his capacity as
ranger. While I'm sure it is not a full time job, he does seem to have an active
role in the planning and overall direction of policy.

And a very fine documentary it is.
He did seem to drive around checking out the place in his landrover. I
expect he does this frequently, making sure things are as they should be
around the estate.

It was interesting to see that he had some good "green" credentials of
his own. He joked about the failed biomass project and there was a
brief stop-over at the shop supplied with organic. Presumably an
interest that has been there for some years, going on quietly without
quite the same beating of breast and public display as a certain
someone else!
