Sarah is married to Dominic Caldecott and is a direct royal descent -
but does anyone know what her connection actually is?

Sarah Caldecott is the daughter of the late Lord Nicholas Gordon-Lennox
(1931-2004) and thus a niece of the current (10th) Duke of Richmond,
Lennox & Gordon.

And the royal descent goes back eleven generation to an illegitimate
son of Charles II. If all those with such descents were counted as
royal we would be overrun with royals - there must be tens of
thousands of them.

As can be seen on Paul Theroff's List of Descendants of James I&VI

Certainly. But considerably fewer with an all-male line descent from a
sovereign, like the abovementioned Sarah Caldecott. Here we are talking
a few scores, rather than tens of thousands, I'd imagine.

Well "half-royal" connection would be more suited, descended from
Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond, 1st Duke of Lennox; sired by
Charles II of England and Scotland and his mistress, Louise de
Keroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth.
If interested in the Lennox family, pick up the book "The Aristocrats"
(later made into a television series), which chronicles the lives of
Charles II's infamous great-grand-daughters (their father was Charles
II, second Duke of Richmond).
