... well, not such a regular of late, thanks to my move to Canada
earlier this year and a summer spent preparing my new book for a
publisher - but that's what I'm posting about now: in early 2007,
McFarland & Company is publishing my biography of the stage and screen
comedienne Charlotte Greenwood.
Here's McFarland's listing, just out today:
The spring catalog isn't out officially till January, but this is a
nice preview.
And here's my site on Charlotte and the book:
Mindful of topic here - Charlotte may have made a career out of
clowning, but off stage she was a regal woman of great taste and
refinement, who had a royal connection of her own - a descent from
Edward III that made her cousin to her great friend and fellow tall
lady, Irene Baroness Ravensdale. Charlotte was also friend and dance
partner to the Duke of Kent and Amadeo of Savoy, the future puppet-king
of Croatia, and she made friends with the future Edward VIII when at
the Hotel Berkeley she lent the prince her portable victrola so he and
his lady could continue dancing after the hotel orchestra had packed it
in for the night. Another of Charlotte's friends was Albert Victor
Baillie, Dean of Windsor, who had her to dine at the Deanery many times
during her run as star of the West End in the 1930's. If only she
could have been presented at court - her ostrich plumes would have
brushed the ceiling :o)
"Charlotte Greenwood" is my third completed book, by the way, but the
first to get published. As Charlotte might say with a shrug, "Go
figure!"
That said, my biography of Chinese author and personality Princess Der
Ling is attracting a publisher in Hong Kong. Stay tuned for
developments.
