Ford was never given a knighthood by any country but he held this
nation's highest civilian honor:
In August, 1999 President Ford received the Medal of Freedom. This
honor, the nation's highest civilian award, was presented by President
Clinton in recognition of President Ford's role in guiding the nation
through the turbulent times of Watergate, the Nixon resignation and the
end of the Vietnam War.
[In October, 1999 President and Mrs. Ford were awarded the
Congressional Gold Medal for "dedicated public service and outstanding
humanitarian contributions." The medal represents Congress's highest
expression of appreciation and is inscribed "Lives of Service, Examples
of Integrity.]"

The Queen and Prince Philip had a State Visit to the US during the
bicentennial. They stayed at the White House with the Fords.
Mrs. Ford wrote in her biography that she and the President were
escorting the Queen and Prince Philip to the White House family
quarters where they were to dress for a State Dinner. When the
elevator door opened, one of the Ford boys came running down the hall,
and without noticing who else was in the elevator shouted " where are
Dad's extra shirt studs? I can't find mine and I can't meet the Queen
of England without shirt studs" He then ran off to his father's room.
Mrs. Ford started to apologize to the Queen, but the Queen laughed and
said " I have one just like that at home".=20
