Dusty...
I was wondering why Lady Jane Grey did not stay Queen of England???
didn't Edward VI sign in his will thats she was his successor??? or was
his father, Henry VIII's will overule his sons in succession???

Matt Lavengood...
Speaking of Lady Jane, does anyone know what title Lord Guilford
Dudley, her husband, used during his 9 days as consort?

(Gary Holtzman) garyholtzman...
His father wanted him to be king, but Jane refused.

And speaking of that, now that I think about it, why wasn't she known
as Lady Jane Dudley after her marriage?

(Gary Holtzman) garyholtzman...
She was sometimes called Jane Dudley, and, briefly, Queen Jane. It is History that
knows her as Lady Jane Grey.

Stephen Stillwell / Tom Wilding...
The quick and easy answer is that neither the populace, particularly of
London, nor the majority of the aristocracy accepted the coup d'etat by
Northumberland, Jane's father-in-law. The will of a sickly, easily
influenced boy was of no consequence. Jane and her husband - both quite
young - neither wanted the marriage or the position. Mary's claim was
substantially "better" and the attempt to replace her withered away.

Don Aitken...
And Henry VIII had an Act of Parliament (the Act of Succession) which
gave him the power to dispose of the crown by will; Edward VI did not.

Mike Stone...
Mattuvinteress, does that condition also apply to the more distant heirs,
like the Grey family?

I raise the point, because both Catherine Grey and her sister Mary would
later contract clandestine marriages without the sovereign's permission (or
even knowledge). Did that affect their right of succession to the throne?

Matt Lavengood...
I suppose it all comes down to the fact that Mary had the majority of
the people on her side, while Jane did not. It's that simple.
