It seems from what I have heard on this List that the vast majority of
"good" monarchs, and I use that term loosely, batted for the other
side.

What, you mean cricket? Edward VIII enjoyed a good game of golf and
George VI played tennis, but I've never come across any British monarch
who batted, either for his own team or another. No foreign monarch , to
my knowledge, has ever played cricket, unless, perhaps, the late King
Hussein, when he was at Harrow.

You have obviously never read 'African Days Remembered', by retired
missionary, Reverend Stapleton S Love, for it contains a compelling account
of the cricket matches organised by King Solomon T'lawmbio lV, ruler of the
Sipimui tribe who once owned much of northern Kenya.
One notable feature of the royal cricket matches recorded by the good
Reverend was the use of shrunken heads (formerly belonging to captured
Sipimui enemies) instead of a cricket ball. As the Reverend Love noted in
his journal at the time, "The day wore slowly on under an endless canopy of
cobalt blue sky, the only sounds one could hear were the drone of insects
amongst the flowers, and the periodic 'thwack' of willow connecting
unerringly with bone - followed almost immediately by polite applause as the
King drove yet another skull towards the boundary"
(a full reprint of the Reverend Love's account of the match will be posted
upon request)
