Hi --
I need help with a piece of educational terminology. Is there a formal
term in the U.S. for a school district employee whose job is to
occasionally visit all the schools in one section of a city, evaluate
the quality of education, make recommendations on how to improve
things, recommend budgetary changes, etc.? I believe that in some
countries, they use terms like "school inspector" or "education
inspector," but to my American ears "school inspector" sounds like
someone who would check the physical safety of the building.
Thank you in advance.

To my knowledge, that would be 'non-existent'. I do not know of any school
district in the United States that has a dedicated employee to evaluate the
programs or make recommendations.

Thanks, James. That would explain why I can't seem to come up with the
U.S. term for it.

I have to agree. I never heard of anyone being paid to do this in the
US.

Thanks, Dorothy. It's always tricky to write about another country's
educational system, since not every job title has an exact equivalent
in English. I wound up calling the guy an Educational Quality
Inspector, which seems clear enough in context.
