#1 has a lump on her knee. It's quite obvious when her knee is bent, but not
visable when it's straight. It's in the lower half, and about 10mm wide, and
is soft when you feel it.
It looks a bit like a ganglian (sp?).
She's had it a bit. I noticed it some time ago, then forgot about it and
when I saw it again, I thought it looked a bit smaller than I remembered.
I've checked it again and thought it looks larger again (although this may
be angle I'm looking at or misremembering) although there isn't much in it.
As far as I know she hasn't bumped it nor is it painful according to her,
but I'm not sure she'd tell me if it was as she doesn't want to see the
doctor.
Any suggestions?

I would just take her to be seen. I think the worst they would
recommend right off is an x-ray. I have heard of Baker's cysts
appearing in the front of the knee, but normally they are in the back
of the knee.

Take her in. If it is a ganglion cyst, it will continue to grow until
it interferes with the function of the joint. The earlier they remove
it, the more likely they are to get all of it and less likely it is to
regrow. Surgery is fairly simple - a day surgery, with local
anesthesia and valium to ease anxiety. Ganlion cysts don't usually
show up in children and generally do not affect the knee. If she ever
injured that knee, it might predispose her to a ganglion cyst, though.
Some families are predisposed to ganglion cysts - does anyone else in
your family have them?
