SeekUp...
I'm looking for crafts/hobbies/activities that will keep my 10 year-old son
busy. He loves construction activities (Lego, Knex, etc), and once spent
days making a model railway from matches. Woodwork is a possibility; links
for age-appropriate projects would be appreciated. I also thought he might
enjoy making those 70's spider-web pictures from string & nails (no idea
what to call them, so can't web-search for instructions).
Any suggestions will be welcome.

Penny Gaines...
I've got a book called "100 designs in Pin and Thread", which is one
name for that type of picture. Inside it starts "string art, pin and
thread work, or filography is a precise craft..." That should give you
enough to web-search on it.

Someone suggested models, that's a great idea. Whittling, woodcarving,
woodburning, making a Heath Kit (do they still have those ? ;-) Paint by
number? Leather-tooling? 3-D puzzles?

Home Depot and Lowes have workshops on the weekends where kids and parents
build stuff.

Having a ten year old son I can grok to your question. The string art

Cheap fun:

Buy a bucketload of 1/2" and 1" PVC fittings ( elbows, T's, end caps, etc. )
and a couple of lengths of pipe. Give Junior a hacksaw, and have him cut the
pipe to various sizes. Then buy a few feet of 1/8" all-thread bar stock, and matching
washers and nuts. Have an adult cut then to different lengths. These can be used
as axles, handles, etc.

From that, he can build anything from a boat that floats to a fully functional
catapult, and anything in between. All for about $15-$20 in parts than can
be used over and over again.

might be something, but I'd suggest following his lead and helping him
explore things that tend to grow out of his current interests. With our son
I have learned that manual dexterity development and imagination are the key
factors in determining what [and if] he will be interested in. He also
really gets into Lego's [can we say bionicles!] but has recently developed
an interest in 'fancy lettering'. So, some inexpensive supplies to let him
explore that are in order atm. If your DS is like most ten year olds,
expect him to wax and wane in the enthusiasm dept quickly, so don't pour
lots of time and money into things he may only enjoy and pursue for a short
week or month. Oh, one thing you did not mention is models. Perhaps your
DS would be of an age to be interested in making some of the snap together
types, but they would be made in an hour or so......

Geometric String Art

My ds liked to do that.

You can, but unassembled ones are almost literally worth their weight in
gold. There are lots of people out there trying to reclaim their youth
by assembling the kids they couldn't afford as kids. ;-)
