Alli's PDO teacher commented that if she hadn't heard Alli talk to me, she
wouldn't know that Alli could talk. Apparently, although she talks in almost
every other setting, when I'm not there with her, she won't talk at school.
Doesn't cry or fuss much-just doesn't talk. She is probably signing, but her
teacher doesn't understand what she's saying, except for a few obvious ones
like UP. Alli doesn't seem to have trouble talking in any other settings,
but this is the only time during the week that she's away from both Daddy
and I at the same time. In fact, the usual comment is how verbal she is and
how well she talks (by my last count, she has about 50 spoken words and 65
ASL signs, and she has been stringing them together for several months).
There are 4 children in this group, and Alli's one of the youngest at 16
months (the group started out as 6-12 month olds at the beginning of the
school year, with most children over 9 months). She is in the program two
half-days a week while I teach my college classes.
Anyone else see this?

Yes indeedy, and I'll bet she's just a reserved type. :-) I wouldn't
worry about it, but then DS still won't talk at the ped's checkups.

Absolutely and at a mere 16 months I wouldn't worry about it for one second
:-)

My husband has his old kindergarten report card (from about 1963) with
teacher comments like, "James still won't talk to me". Finally,
in her last set of comments for the year, she wrote, "James finally
spoke to me!" Apparently, from looking at the card, he could do all
the work she asked him to do - he just wouldn't talk.

Yes! DD didn't respond to her own name at her daycare center when she
was about 16-17 months old. The teacher asked if I spoke to her in
Chinese and one Chinese-speaking parent tried several names (without any
success). DD spoke but she just didn't respond when the teacher said
her name.
I think it's an adjustment thing. After awhile, DD began to respond.
