So we have this probable move hanging over our heads. It's been over 2
months since DH's interview, and it looks like it's going to happen, but

I'm not sure I EVER want to shovel snow again!

My parents may have the right idea. They figure they've got six kids,

That's not where my son is -- he's in Iowa in school.
NC is because that's where DH found work.
Banty...
We think.

In his rather narrow field, we follow the jobs rather than look for a
place to settle and then look for work there -- though there is some
selectivity about which jobs to apply for, they are few and far between.

and we're well scattered, so maybe two months each year living with each
of us summers in Fairbanks and Duluth and Cambridge, spring or fall in
Dubuque and Kansas City, winter in San Jose -- or, now, North Carolina

I grew up just south of Chicago and went to school in Des Moines and
Minneapolis. I never had much problem assimilating in NE (didn't live
there, studied their briefly at Cold Spring Harbor, NY and vacationed
in MA, VT and CT), lived in San Jose (Almaden area) for 3 years (liked
it but too many people - also a larger quota of weirdos, per capita,
but Californians seem to be a more open and laid-back sort) Before
that lived in the Raleigh/RTP area. I found people in RTP, NC to be
rude and SLOW - and encountered racism the likes of which I had never
seen before. The Yankee hatred is alive and well, too. Greensboro
may be different.

(no, that's a joke -- though DH and I both hope we are able to get a
place with an in-law apartment, so they CAN stay with us for as long as
they want, and still have some sense of a place of their own.)

Are you coming to NC, Dragonlady, or is that a sibling of yours? If
it's you, it sounds like your family would have lots of needs met here.
The housing can be cheap or extremely pricey, depending on where you
land, and there's all kinds of colleges for your kids.

With my siblings relatively scattered, I'm not sure the upper midwest
would be a good idea, anyway -- though I'd love to live closer to my
sister and her kids. But Duluth . . . brrrrr. . .
(And that would be out of the question until DH retires, anyway;
there's no one there doing the kind of work he does, not even in
Minneapolis.)

Thanks. I don't know how much longer I can hold my breath.

OK, it wouldn't make sense for you to move to the upper Midwest, then.

it's not signed and sealed yet. I'm not very good at this waiting thing
