funny question about vocalization

Stephanie...
I want to ask a question with a very limited set of information. I am sorry
if I am so vague that maybe I won't get decent info. I know a 5yo boy who
has some unknown LD. I am basing this on my experience alone. So I could be
completely full of horse pucky. But I don't think so.

This kid vocalizes *constantly.* When I first met him, at about 4 3/4, he
did not speak at all. I don't remember if he vocalized a lot then. He grunts
and makes all sorts of noises more or less constantly. He can sort of
interact as part of group using words.

The thing that I am wondering is is the absolute constant making of noise,
if not speaking making other noises with the mouth, normal? I would not ask
if it is normal for this age, since he is not really operating at his age
IMO. I don't remember my son ever doing this. He will make noises that go
with what he is playing. But he does not just make noises all the time.

It is literally *constant*.

It does sound like something atypical might be going on. Luke is 5yo and he
does make a lot of noise. It seems is more often then not singing,
screaming, chanting, just making racket. He isn't anywhere near constant
though.

Like you said, hard to tell based on what you share. Could be anything from
a tic to bad habits, to hearing difficulties making it so the child does not
realize he is making the noises, to tourettes to who knows.
