volunteering in classroom and homework update

The homework load seems to be much easier next week. We are still getting
the homework on Friday, instead of Monday. Gosh, if it continues to look
this light, I will stop asking for it on Fridays. Don't know if other
parents have said anything or if this is a fluke or if this is just how it's
supposed to be.

I volunteered in class today. That was an eye opener. There are kids there
I just want to cry for. They have no clue how to do any of the work. They
don't seem to understand how to copy words or what sounds the letters make
or anything. It's only kindergarten and they're already behind. It did

I don't know what your school is like, of course, but over here they would not
be considered behind. Children are not expected to be literate before school.
This is especially true for our school, where 90% of children are from a
non-English-speaking background, and some begin school unable to speak English
at all.
TBH I think there is something seriously wrong if the teacher hasn't figured
out that the children don't know the alphabet or how to write the letters.
And it's a great way to make the children feel like failures when they should
not.

give me perspective on where DS stands, and he is probably somewhere near
the top of the class. His graded homework has been all "O's." I'm happy
about that, but I do think if he was having that much trouble with homework,
these kids were in much more of a mess. Maybe their parents said something.
