A friends daughter is about to have her 9th birthday who has been seen
enjoying singing into the karaoke machine of a friend of similar age.
The machine was plugged into the television and the song titles
appeared on the bottom of the screen along with a wiggly music line to
show the beat of the music.

Can anyone recommend a karaoke machine similar to the above or perhaps
even better? No problem paying a little more if worth it, but
essentially a relatively inexpensive machine is being looked for but
not so cheap the birthday girl will not enjoy it and so that it will
give her lasting pleasure. Product suitabilty for a 9 year old is the
priority.

Any advice appreciated! Thank you.

If the friend has an Xbox, there is a "game" called Karaoke
Revolution. It's probably available for Playstation and Game Cube
too, but not having those, I don't know. It's pretty cool for a lot
of reasons:

1. You can create your own characters, and it displays them singing
in one of many venues, from a garage to Vegas to a rooftop to a video
studio.

2. In addition to the words, it displays the notes -- well, not
exactly the notes, but a bar telling you how high or low to sing. So
if you're off, you sing higher or lower until your arrow matches the
bar.

3. There is "scoring". If you sing well enough, you get a platinum
record. If you get enough platinums, you unlock new outfits, etc.

4. The display changes as you do better or worse. For example, on
the rooftop, if you start singing badly, it starts clouding over and
raining. As you sing better, it clears up, gets bright and sunny,
and a news helicopter comes by to film you. If you're singing really
well, you and your mike get outlined in neon streak lights.

5. (and a consideration for the parents) because it's just a game and
a mike, it doesn't take up as much room as a karaoke machine would.

The only real downside is that you can't just buy new karaoke disks
like you can with a machine. What's on the game is what you get.
There are pretty many songs though, and none of them have cussing.
