Freecycle is a good idea, and to the original poster, good idea as well.
When I was a kid, someone gave my mother a box of books for me, just because
they were springcleaning. I still have most of them! I saved every book I
ever had, mostly, in case I had a kid. I checked a lot of books out of
libraries a lot too though, so a lot of the books I really loved, I didn't
own. That was back in the days before Amazon etc, and in our town you'd have
to get a book store to special order anything they didn't have.

I think asking for hand-me-down kids clothing or books/toys CAN be done
politely, at least to the people I know. Most people are happy to clear out
their old space and I know people that would rather give it away than deal
with a consignment shop or anything. I have had people ask me. I would have
been happy to give for free except for wanting to save some stuff for a next
baby, which I plan to start trying for soon. As soon as I finish having my
kids, someone can have the motherload :) Except for books. :) One of these
days someone is going to get a whole round of clothing and baby gear!
I am trying to build up our home library and you know, books aren't cheap
anymore, especially if you want to buy a lot of titles! I think I paid
around $9 for Goodnight Moon. That's ok but I have a long list of books I'd
like to get. I know there are a lot of book clubs out there, such as a Dr.
Suess one, etc...where you get hardcovers and board books for good prices.

Are there any book clubs that have a wide selection for books up through
elemntary school level (from baby to school level)? I am interested in
things like Where the Sidewalk Ends, Harold and the Purple Crayon, The
Monster at the End of this Book, Guess How Much I Love You, and then things
older like Ghosts I Have Been, etc.

Any other recommended book club ideas welcome, even if it's not just what I

I'm of a mind that money spent on books in never wasted, especially kids
books that are read over and over.
See if there's a discount bookstore like Atlantic Book Warehouse near you.
Check garage sales and library sidewalk sales.

HCN...
I just cleaned out lots of our little kid books and donated it to the
elementary school they used to go to, which will be having a "Gently used
book sale" in a couple of weeks. Another school has a rummage sale in the
spring that I've seen books at (my daughter loads up on stuffed animals
during that sale). ALSO... at least a couple times a year the library guild
has a used book sale.

You should check to see what sales are around your area.

Also, since kids grow out of certain books so quickly, instead of building
up YOUR library... go to your local library. Right now my 11 year old
daughter has about a dozen anime graphic novels out... if we had to buy them
we would go broke (and run out of bookcase space!).

mentioned....TIA..

Garage sales, rummage sales, library book sales are where I got most
of my children's books.

The used bookstores are also good, but if you don't have good ones in
your area, there are some online. The shipping can be more expensive
than the books though.

to buy online. It searches a lot of the bookstores and lists the
sellers by price.

dragonlady...
I've had some amazing luck buying lightly used books through Amazon.com.

Good idea--the books get wear on them anyway, I just never thought of
buying used because of the shipping. I'll check it out! Thanks..
