My son, who is now 13 months has recently been walking on his toes
ALOT. He has been walking for about 4 months now, but just started
this. I just started to notice also, that he is pretty flat footed. My

Right, I said that it protects feet, but the poster was saying get the kid
into Robeez type shoes now to prevent foot problems (as opposed to going
barefoot?). Maybe I misread that.

I would mention it at your next well visit. It can be very normal or it can
be an indicator of something. One of those type things :-)

All 1yo's are flat footed and generally have thick wide feet. Nothing to
worry about yet.

sister and brother both have very flat feet and I wonder if this could
be the cause? He has very very thick feet also. Any suggestions would

My oldest and I have really flat feet too. The 4yo does not but I can't
remember exactly when that changed. Way past 1yo though!

The point of those shoes is to provide some foot protection and mimic
barefoot conditions as closely as possible, so why not have him go barefoot
as much as possible?

I think the medical position on this is that it's not a problem if their
arch forms normally when their foot is flat on the ground.

his foot starting to arch a bit. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
I would just let him walk barefooted or in soft shoes like Robeez or
Bobux as much as possible.

It seems to be very, very common for kids to walk on their toes. Who knows
why. Most kids I know go through it. Our friends' children did it, our
kids did it, the peds' kids did it, his friends' kids did it. They
eventually grow out of it.

Toe walking can be a sign of quite a few things, however it can also be a
normal part of development.
Toe walking can be an issue w/ CP, Tethered Spine, Sensory Integration
Dysfunction, Sensory issues that go in hand w/ autistic tendencies and a
host of other issues. Toe walking itself doesn't indicate that those issues
are what your child has, however it is defiantly worth the effort to have
them checked out. If your not happy w/ the check from your Doc, a visit to
a neurologist would be my next step.
I have BTDT.
But again, some toe walking is completely normal and does not indicate a
disorder. I don't want to seem like I'm trying to scare you ... just
letting you know some facts that I wish I would have known 6 years ago.

Unless he has other behavioral problems, toe-walking is extremely
common. I think the only thing I've ever read about it being a problem
is if he does it 100 percent of the time and can't seem to walk on his
feet normally. I don't know when kids develop an arch, but it isn't
until later anyway.
