Do you keep track of your collection?

Just a question for everyone. Does anyone keep a record of their
goodies? If so, how? Or do most of you keep the info in your heads?

I collect mostly old glass and have amassed collections within that
catagory, I keep records on only part of my collections. I keep a
notebook on depression glass and cross-referenced card files on
several. This is a two-fold benefit. One, I am a "lister." I just
love making lists of things. It seems like a good way to interact
with my stuff. The second is to make it easier for my children to
dispose of this stuff if and when the time comes that they have to do
it. I don't want them putting the things with real value in a yard
sale for a quarter. This can happen--I've bought a few goodies myself
that way.

Hi Lori,
I just was curious as to how people keep track of things. I have a few
nice pieces of glass and so far just keep them in my head.
But we just made out out wills and I started to think about it. We have
no children so it will fall on my brother in law to dispose of
everything and he knows squat about antiques of any kind. As Mary Ann
said, I would hate to see my Tiffin Flanders goblets priced for a
quarter at a yard sale. Of course someone else's yard sale is another

Hi, Marie
Everything doesn't have to go to your brother to dispose of.
I think you should have a codicil in your will, that certain pieces
be given to special friends and people who have meant a lot to
you. Mark each piece with someone's name (paper gummed
label on the bottom), then take a picture of it and put that
as part of the will. Arrange to have the pieces delivered to
them, with a lovely thank-you note that you've written beforehand,
telling them why they were special to you. I can guarantee
that those pieces will be treasured and not disposed of for
a quarter.
Come to think about it, I guess "written beforehand" is
superfluous in this case ;)

Thanks Kris,
I'll think about that, it sounds like a great idea. I guess the biggest
problem is "you can't take it with you"!

Well....I look at it this way: If there IS a place you can't take it to,
you wouldn't want to. ;)

Good question. Our remaining collection (my chalkware
stringholders) fit on the non-opening end of our hanging
cupboards). We decided that's how we'd keep track: if
we run out of room, we have to start shedding the ones
we like the least.
