I bought a pastel painting signed Eakins. After searching online I
found out who Eakins was and discovered that the painting I bought is
"Spinning".
First, I found an article that explains that Eakins made two painting
for someone in 1882 and called them Knitting and Spinning. Then I found
another source online showing Eakin's Knitting and Spinning as
sculpture see:
Did he draw then made the sculpture? or vise versa? or there is no
painting,it's only a sculpture?
I need to be sure that the one I have is the real "Spinning" pastel
painting, not a reproduction. Does anybody know about "Spinning" being
in a museum or so? how can I get sure that it's the original? Is Eakin's
"Spinning" drawn with pastel?
last thing: I think it's value is $8400, I need a commentary on the
price.
check the painting:(this is online printings, It's just to see what it
looks like)

A pastel would be called a drawing, not a painting. Two different
processes.
Is there a museum near where you live? Or at least a qualified appraiser?
Very difficult to tell on-line.

It looks like Eakins painted at least two pastel/watercolors entitled
"spinning", maybe more. What is the size of your print? It appears
that the original for the print you've shown us is 11" x 8" and is in
the collection of a Mrs. John R. Garrett Sr. see:
search the page for "spinning" and it's the 2nd one in the list. You
could note that in the first Eakins painting of the same name, the
spinner is facing the other direction.
Without more info of your painting (size, what it's painted on,
close-ups of the signature, or even an image of the thing) it's
impossible for someone online to give you any more info than you already
have. Why do you think your print is worth $8400? Did you get someone
knowledgeable to look at it (in which case, why ask us?) or is that what
someone wants you to pay for it? Anyway I would get the opinion of
several art experts (or at least one...and not one who wants to sell you
the print) before laying out that much money on something that I know
nothing about.
Good luck on your search
Rhiannon
and happy holidays to all...the darkest night is over.
