Over the weekend, at a local high quality consignment shop, I bought a
cinnabar vase that has a blue coating inside and on the bottom. The top lip
and bottom lip of the vase are exposed brass. There are no ID markings on
the bottom of it.
The Cinnabar exterior of the vase is covered with what appears to be a very
dark wood carved in a intricate pattern that exposes the cinnabar. It is so
perfect that I believe it is fake or an imitation piece. A tiny piece of
the dark 'wood' broke off while I was handling it. I placed it on a knife
tip then held a match to it. The burning substance did not smell like
plastic and after removing the match it glowed for a second or two. I

That's _really_ not the sort of test I'd want to do with cinnabar, just
in case it were genuine!

I agree, just a tiny sliver broke off about 1/8" x 1/16"

don't think plastic will glow when held to a match.
How can I determine if it is a realm piece or reproduction piece? If the
ebony is covered in lacquer that might explain why it looks so perfect?
I did a web search for cinnabar vase but nothing interesting turned up.
The consignment shop generally sell very high quality items, though I have
seen repros in there before.

Will upload pictures if it might help identify the piece.
