I hate to recommend the evil thing, but M$oft Access is very commonly
encountered and has a huge range of nightschool classes and
introductory books dealing with it. It's entirely capable of doing this
sort of task and a raw beginner will probably achieve more with Access
than they will with any similar tool.
Just don't let him loose on it for a year, then ask a professional
database developer (usually me) to fix it, or turn it into a website
overnight.

know of such a program?
Sorry I can't provide more detail but any program
you know about would be of interest.

There is a firm called Microsoft who supply expensive software for most
home computers. Their office type products will provide a spreadsheet
program or a complex database, either of which can be used to set up a
database for antiques. If this is too expensive there is a free suit of
programs that do the same thing - Open Office. I use the spreadsheet in
this product for my collection. Any program will require some computer
experience to set up the data that the owner requires.
