t-13...
Anybody know anything about vellum?
Heck, I am not even good on the old papers, you know, wove and laid and
all that.

What does vellum look like under magnification? Etc.

Marshall Schuon...

The only vellum I know about was the stuff we used to use in high
school drafting class. It was heavy and translucent and we would lay
it over a pencil drawing to do a finished ink rendering. Probably not
what you're asking about, though.

As an old drafter [nee draftsman/draughtsman] I think Marshall's reference
is to "linen," which was actually a piece of linen cloth hardened with an
encasing surface of paste. The surface became smooth and translucent
[bluish] and, as Marshall says, was used to prepare an India-ink finished
drawing. My dad was a true artisan with ink. I, on the other hand, would
always manage to get the nib too close to the straightedge and the ink would
run under and make a nasty blot.

On the other hand, I don't know nothing 'bout no vellum.

Rich!

I think you should take the lurker title away from ForestDuck.

Forest Duck...
Rich Maxson-a name from the past. You use to come around this site a few
years back. Haven't heard from you in awhile.

I have a calligrapher friend who may have a piece of vellum around and
if so I can take a look see at it and maybe describe it (or scan a piece
at high res). In general though, I would think that it wouldn't have
any "threads" in it as paper would. I would think that it should look
somewhat like compressed leather (but that's entirely an uneducated guess).
