I've got some earthenware or stoneware plates by Phillips of London. I
believe the date is late 1800's and manufactured by Cauldon. The one
thing the I can't identify is the crest on each piece and would
appreciate some help and advice. It appears to be an eagle carrying a
baby in a basket. Any ideas.

Here is a link to the pictures.

Best guess - school or regimental emblem - needle in a haystack sort of
and 19th Liverpool regiments both used similar emblem on WWI grave
markers.

Hi Nancy

I managed, by luck more than anything, to identify the crest as
belonging to the Stanley family. How the crest became used on the
stoneware that I have is still a bit of a mystery. It does seem in
keeping, that it may have been used in an Officers or SNCO mess. There
is also a link between Lord or Earl Derbyshire to the Liverpool
regiments, and as you have kindly pointed out, there is a resemblance.

Cheers

Like that connection with the Earl of Derby. Although your plates
could have been ordered for a pub (there seem to be a heck of a lot of
them named after the bird and baby motif) wonder if it wasn't tableware
for the backstairs help at an uppercrusty Stanley household - perhaps
even the Earl.
