NBC orders full season of '30 Rock'
Peacock has picked up all but two if its frosh skeins
By JOSEF ADALIANHOLLYWOOD
Following an encouraging perfomance Thursday night, NBC has picked up
a full season of the Lorne Michaels laffer "30 Rock."
Skein, which stars Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, was the last remaining
Peacock bubble skein. While NBC brass liked the show creatively, execs
wanted to see how it performed last night in its new 9:30 Thursday
timeslot behind "Scrubs."

So, they renewed it after it performed poorly after Scrubs?
Rob Jensen...
|
Translation: it has no other half-hour project far enough in
development to put on after Scrubs.

Yep. A poor showing against a CSI rerun AND directly after what will likely
be a higher rated (because it was a season premiere) Scrubs episode. 30
Rock will only go down from here.
David...
|
Eh, from the viewers' perspective who cares what the numbers say. The
important thing is it's sticking around. Another article mentioned that
NBC is confident that they can nurture it the way they did "The Office."

Well, it needs a better time slot or night. I'd like to see it, but I
already have 2 shows at that time I am committed to... so I can't. Why
David...
|
It'll probably continue airing new episodes the next two months while
everything else is in reruns, and it's also available at the NBC
website.
|
on earth are they putting it up against GA and CSI?
David...
|
NBC must figure if they can't beat CBS and ABC anyway they'll at least
have a high-quality comedy block. And maybe it can attract the right
demos.
Obveeus...
|
I'll agree that it is being done as counter programming, but calling Office
or 30Rock 'high quality' is off base. These shows don't hold a candle to
the NBC Thursday night comedy legacy.
David...
|
You have to admit, your personal tastes aside, all 4 of these shows are
generally regarded as high quality. And, in my personal opinion, this
Obveeus...
|
Why would I have to admit that? Whwere are the droves of people calling 30
Rock 'High Quality'?
David...
|
Most critics are calling it high quality. I don't think I've seen a
single bad review.
|
|
is the best Thursday comedy block NBC's ever had. Not to say that all
Obveeus...

Not even one strong comedy in the block and two really bad comedies. 30 Rock
Obveeus...

So, it is 'high quality' in the same was as Arrested Development? The
unwatchable version of 'high quality'.
Victor Velazquez...
|
I see now why your posts in this thread have been mystifying me. Arrested
Development is a case study in tightly-scripted, character-driven,
knee-slapping situational comedy. But then as Michael Bluth put it, maybe
the characters just weren't very relatable. As a misanthrope, I found them
completely engaging. YMMV, obviously.

David...
|
I think as a child you were dropped on your funny bone.
|
|
is on par with Joey.
Obveeus...
|
Both of them are glaringly unfunny. They are unfunny in very different
ways, but unfunny none the less.
Obveeus...
|
'Prove' that 30 Rock is unfunny? Let me guess, you never took a course in
math even philosophy?
Garondo Marondo...
|
Yeah, the line for that one was too long....
Look every one, a geek, if there's one thing us nerds in RAT hate its a
geek!
David...

No Johnny-come-lately geek will ever measure up to Ian anyway. Just
like no one will ever out-snark me or out-weirdo you.
David...
|
Oh, and no one wil ever out-grump you.
|
|
|
|
|
David...
|
Well like I said, "in my personal opinion."
|
NBC has usually had a weak show or two in the comedy blocks, but there was a
time where there were a couple of really strong shows to ofset that.
David...
|
Yes they've had one excellent show or 2 great shows but NBC's never had
a very good 2 hour block with no weak links before.
Obveeus...
|
Right now, they have two ok comedies (Earl and Scrubs) and two really bad
comedies (Office and 30 Rock). Scrubs is the best of the bunch, but even it
Ronnie Bateman...
won't ever qualify as 'classic' the way so many past NBC Thurday night
comedies have.
Victor Velazquez...
|
Earl and Scrubs are okay but way too sentimental and twee. You seem to have
a different idea than I do about what makes good comedy. I prefer laughing
to having a simple-minded philosophy shoved down my throat but that may just

Replace the word 'even' with 'or'. The point remains, you must not
understand what 'proof' even means if you are asking me to 'prove' 30 Rock
isn't funny.
|
be me, YMMV, etc.
|
David...
|
The current lineup isn't classic, maybe. It's too early to tell. But
I'm not weighing the lineups on average. "Seinfeld" + 3 average shows
doesn't beat a good show in every timeslot.
|
|
|
|
these shows are timeless tv classics, but taken as a whole this is the
best 2 hour block NBC's had.
Obveeus...
|
Better than: Cosby, Family Ties, Cheers, Night Court?
David...
Better than: Mad About You, Wings, Seinfeld, Frasier?
Obveeus...
|
Ack...is it really any wonder you are mocked for your 'brillant TV lineup
programming abilities'?
David...
|
In this very rare instance I have to side with WQ. Cheers/Night
Court/Seinfeld/Frasier would indeed be superb but unfortunately there
Garondo Marondo...
|
Cosby Was preachy, Ties was REALLY preachy and wouldn't have been
watchable without Fox, only Cheers and Court were actual comedies.
Mad about you was turtorous, Wings was mainly funny when Tony Shalhoub
or the big dumb guy were on, Frasier could get highly repetitive and
during its Thursday night days was too snooty leaving only Seinfeld as
the comic gold and there are times when The Office is great too, 30
Rock has Sir Alec Baldwin and the man can do nothing wrong, Tina Fey is
funny and smart.
..
Garondo Marondo!

You were 'acked' for claiming those 4 comedies were on par with Joey. It
shows how little you understand about comedy.
|
was never a moment in time when NBC's lineup came together that
Obveeus...
|
At least you admit that you are not thinking correctly.

Obveeus...
Obveeus...
|
I 'acked' you for equating those shows with being like 'Joey'.
Now, you reply asking 'which four comedies'?
The thread really shouldn't be that hard to follow.

perfectly. "Cosby" and "Mad About You" were good but not upper-caliber
and "Family Ties" and "Wings" are glaring weak links.
David...
|
I'm chalking this one up to "even a broken clock is right twice a
day."
|
Obveeus...
|
Weak links compared to the others listed above, but still far superior to
shows like Joey and 30 Rock.

Prelim Nielsen numbers have "Rock" scoring its best adults 18-49
rating yet, up 25 % from its week-ago numbers.
NBC has now ordered full seasons of all of its new shows, save for the
canceled "Kidnapped" and "20 Good Years."
