Pledge to dine at home with family; maybe win N.Y trip

By Karen Jowers
Staff writer

Military families can put their names into the pot to win a free trip to
New York, and a _dinner cooked by Sandra Lee, host of Food Network’s
“Semi-Homemade Cooking"_.

[Hokey smokes! Our troops deserve better than this, but I can't help but
wonder what kind of tablescape she'd make...]

Hopefully camouflage and nobody will be able to find the food.

They'll probably find the recipes here:

Details will be available on how to enter the contest, from Sept. 1-30,
at the Defense Commissary Agency’s Web site.

It’s all part of the commissary agency’s push to get military families
to participate in the national “Family Day — A Day to eat Dinner with
Your Children,” on Sept. 25, started by the National Center on Addiction
and Substance Abuse. For last year’s event, more than 1.3 million
Americans pledged to have dinner with their children. At the commissary
Web site, military families can link to the site where they can make the
pledge this year.

The Coca-Cola Co., national sponsor of the event, is sponsoring this
extra event for military families.

Commissary officials said Defense Department schools have also agreed to
participate in the Family Day promotion as a “back to school” emphasis.
The National Military Family Association and the Fisher House Foundation
are also supporting the commissary’s efforts.

It’s just one night and one dinner around the table with the family, but
the hope is that it might spur some lifestyle changes.

Research has shown that having family meals is an important part of
deterring substance abuse in children, noted Patrick Nixon, director of
the Defense Commissary Agency. “With deployments, and defending our
country 24/7, military families face many challenges. It makes it more
important than ever for parents to have quality time with their children
whenever possible.”
