situation before Final Jeopardy and the remaining contestant won by
default?

Yes, I've seen it happen a few times, rare, but it has happened.

What he meant was that even if the contestant lost his entire stake, he
would still be champion because zero still beats two negative numbers.

Are you sure about that? Has any contestant actually been declared
champion with $0?
I mean I know a guy became champ with $1 once, but I never saw champ by
$0 happen.
