I have only been watching this show for a couple months and
I'm confused about something. Who is the boss, Hotch or
Gideon? It seems as if Hotch is supposed to be, but Gideon
is constantly giving orders to Hotch.

According to wiki, Hotch is the head of the BAU team. My guess is he
defers to Gideon because he is the most experienced profiler in the group.

Gideon is the real boss because he's what is known as the indispensable
employee. He can get away with just about anything because the FBI
doesn't want to lose him.

Yet I'm guessing he is not at the SES level. Probably a
GS-14 or 15. That means that at the most he is making about
$119K.

I've watched Criminal Minds since the beginning. Gideon used to be the
leader (in the time before the show started) but he had a breakdown when
a case went bad and had to take time off. Hodgkins (Hodge) was promoted.
Gideon returned, but not to the leadership role. But since he had been
the leader for a long time, Hodge often defers to him.

Pretty much the way I see it too.

They haven't made it clear, but I think Gideon is clearly da Boss.
Plus he seems to have the better, bigger office. :)

Ahhhh, that explains a lot. I knew there must be some
explanation. Maybe I'll eventually see some of the earlier
episodes in reruns.
