This show is really good. I sure hope it can pull out of the ratings decay.

I thought there was a steady, consistent flow to this episode. Maybe

The bad skits on Studio 60 take up less than a minute during the one hour
show. If this really prevents you from watching/enjoying...
Dano...
|
I'll finish that for you...DON'T WATCH...and don't waste your precious time
posting about it either (yeah...I know, fat chance, ).

They've been totalling a lot more than that.

Obviously it doesn't prevent me from watching. Overall, I'm
enjoying the show. I wouldn't keep watching it if I weren't.
I'm simply mentioning that the sketch parts of the program
are not impressing me, to the point where they're a bit of
a distraction.
As I mentioned earlier, and Barry just alluded to, we didn't
have this problem with TWW. When we saw the behind-the-scenes
creation of a Bartlet speech, the speech itself also gave us
a good payoff.

the best overall episode, so far.

Tonights? It was horrible.
I thought the "Nancy Grace Cell Phone Sketch" was the most relentless
unfunny thing I'd ever seen until, mother of god, JENNY DOESN'T HAVE A
BABY or whatever it was.

You're talking about FRIDAY NIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD.
SoHillsGuy is talking about STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP.
Me, I don't really pay much attention to the quality of the skits.
Other than that they play (or don't play) to the idea that Matt
is a comedy-writing genius, they are throwaways.
The focus should be on the behind the scenes stuff.
|
Obveeus...

I think perhaps most people are talking about the show being
good/better/smooth, not talking about the 3 second bits of sketch comedy on
the show within a show that don't matter much at all.

The "Jenny" sketch, while it wasn't screamingly funny, was hard to
distinguish from lots of sketches I've seen on SNL over the years. As
for "Nancy Grace," BOSTON LEGAL does a perfect parody of her in every
episode, and S60's was not in that class at all. It was more like a
class play version of SNL.

I find Amanda, beautiful as she is, to be the weakest link here. I found
myself wondering how good this could have been with Christine Lahti in that

Wull, hey! Good to meet ya. Rob does sound like a writer's name somehow,
doesn't it? HH of 2 adult females here & we watched & loved GGs early on -
but then, it just stopped holding our attention & we gradually drifted away.
And, yes to clever dialogue. I never had a problem with cuteness, just plot
directions, twists & turns, maybe. Getting somewhere. Or not. Solid
cast, though, and concept & creator, etc.

role.

I think Lahti is the only truly compelling actor in the show, and she's
just a guest.
IMHO, the acting across the board is the weakest aspect, especially
Sarah Paulson and Amanda Peet. Paulson is really poor at the comedy
sketches, over and above the writing problems, and Peet seems to be
reciting her lines rather than delivering them in any believable or
interesting way. I read that Mary Louise Parker was first choice for
Peet's role and can just imagine how much better that would've been.
I agree with the posters who think the comedy skits need improvement,
and was surprised to find this:

"...Sorkin writes all the scripts himself, after brainstorming with his
writing staff. (He hired Mark McKinney, a veteran of The Kids in the
Hall and SNL, to help him nail the sketch writing.)"
Patty Winter (patty1...
|
That's very interesting. I've never seen KitH, but McKinney is one
of the main writers on "Slings & Arrows," and it's a wonderful show.
|
|

So Sorkin knew he himself wasn't a comedy writer and did try to hire
one with a "name," but seems to have made an unfortunate choice. I
never cared for TKITH either.
Rob Jensen...
|
If he was going to raid TKITH, he really should have gone with Dave
Foley, IMO.

The RL model for Amanda's character was supposed to be quite young.
Buy the premise, buy the bit.
For Alex W's benefit, next week's preview showed Matt hitting on Lauren
G at the wrap party for the show aired on 16 October. [Meta comment: A

Howzabout that black dress, huh?

Tonight's discussions about the NBS network being 'smarter' than the dreck
on other networks really rang true as Studio 60 is 'smarter' than most of
what is on network TV.
Sting as a musical guest..and they actually let him do some music. Nice
touch.
The show within a show stuff still isn't funny, but the Nicolas Cage

impersonation is exactly what you would see on SNL.
Not sure who the special guest for the show was, maybe Rob Jensen knows?
Dano...

Lauren Graham, star of the Gilmore Girls.
jayembee...
|
Duh. Why do you think Obveeus said "maybe Rob Jensen knows"?
Brian Thorn...
|
And this is supposed to be clear to Studio 60 fans, how exactly? From
the subject, it looks like Rob Jensen was a guest star or writer or
something.

Brian Thorn...

What, are you president of his fan club or something? :-)

Lauren Graham, duh. Haven't seen the episode yet, though (I was
busy).
Obveeus...

Never heard of her. Has she been in anything else besides Studio 60?

Star of Gilmore Girls, plus romantically involved with Matt Perry at
one point, maybe they're still together?

That zooming noise you're hearing is the sound of a joke flying over

I saw a commercial for Gilmore Girls. Seems like she is involved with
someone lese these days.

That'd be only four episodes of NR in its five seasons. . .
Anim8rFSK...
|
And she vanished mysteriously and was never seen or mentioned again . . .
Kevrob...

Hey, you're right. Funny, the arc seemed longer at the time. I think
its because I was working a lot of nights back then, and watched most
of the later NR episodes on tape or when it was in syndication. She
went on to do a shortlived sitcom called "Conrad Bloom" and another
called "M.Y.O.B.", which was like a Bizarro-World version of Gg. [She
was an Aunt, not a Mom, and had the teenage girl dropped on her, v.
Rory being her best friend. Still the hotness, though.]
Funny how I haven't watched a Gg episode yet this season. I've
recorded them all, and I'll get to them, as soon as the NLCS and World
Series are over.
