For the last few years I have only watched a few eps now and again but
did watch the other night and was entertained. Haven't read the other
threads but isn't it likely that Ma can be appointed to finish out Pa's
term.

I think the state's govenor would indeed appoint someone to fulfill
Johnathan's term.
Of course in real life he'd appoint a long time crony and party
supporter, and not the widow.
In real life it is not al all uncommon for a widow to be appointed to fill
her late husband's legislative office. Political scientist Jo Freeman points
out that of the first ten women to serve in the U.S. Senate, five were
appointed fill vacancies and seven served less than a year.
And of the first 14 women elected to Congress, six were the widows of
their immediate predecessors and another three were the daughters of the
representatives who preceded them.
In the past decade we've had U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan, who was appointed
by the governor of Missouri to fill the seat won by her husband,
past-Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan. Mel Carnahan, his son and another man were
killed in a private plane crash a few weeks before the election, and the
people elected him anyway.
We also saw U.S. Rep. Mary Bono, appointed, then elected to the seat
once held by her husband, U.S. Rep. Salvatore "Sonny" Bono of California

interesting way to give Martha something to do.
