It is a soap opera but with a few supernatural elements added on for
effect.
Donna B...

The supernatural elements have never been for effect.

Barnabas Collins...

My understanding is it added the supernatural elements
towards the end when it looked like the cancellation
axe was about to fall.
Ian J. Ball...

No, that was ABC's "Port Charles".
Ian (The show that gave Kelly Monaco her first big break.)

LOL, okay, your understanding is completely off. Still on the air, hasn't
been cancelled, supernatural elements from Day One.
Barnabas Collins...
|
Wasn't it cancelled earlier this year?

We should be so lucky!

Passions is still on NBC daily, 2pm Eastern time. As a couple of others
have pointed out, you're probably thinking of ABC's "Port Charles." One
of the main characters in Passions is a witch, but as far as I know
they've never had a vampire in a storyline...though the witch in this
series claims to have had a fling with Barnabas Collins. : )

That would be wrong. The supernatural elements were what attracted Spik from
Buffy to watch it.

I've noticed a trend for Sci-Fi Channel to show non-scifi during this
past year. I think it's because NBC looks at Sci-Fi and says, "Here's
a place we can dump our shows for minimal cost & maximum profit."
Hence Passions / Law & Order on a channel where it does not belong.

What network (I seem to recall it was a broadcast network) originally aired
"Space: Above and Beyond"? I ask because, thought I can't remember which
episode, there was at least one several years ago that bleeped out a line.
It just surprised me that they (a cable channel) would bleep out a line a
network allowed.

It's unfortunately common.
One reason I stopped watching movies on USA and TNT was that they
seemed to do quite a lot of bleeping or muting of made-for-network-TV
movies.

Maybe the line is bleeped out in the syndication package?
John Duncan Yoyo...

Perhaps the line was always a bleeped out.

Fox aired SAaB. It was one of many shows that had a SciFi theme that
aired for a short time on the network.

Space: Above & Beyond originally aired on Fox before going to Sci-Fi.
Passions, because of its supernatural content (and frequent homages to
Dark Shadows) fits on Sci-Fi. Law & Order: SVU doesn't.

Passions is a way to get a "Dark Shadows" type show that Unviersal
alredy owns. They don't havet to fork over the bucks for the rights.

This is actually nothing new for Sci Fi. I recently had occasion to
recall that back in its first year or two (early 90s) it ran at least
two non-SF series:
(1) THE MAGICIAN, with Bill Bixby. No supernatural-type magic involved.
Bixby played a stage magician who helped people in trouble.
(2) SUSPENSE (the 60s version). A drama anthology which, like ALFRED
Bill...
|
Sci-Fi Channel also ran the 60s version of Batman for a brief period. I
still have a few episodes recorded from that channel.
|
HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, may have had an occasional SF/fantasy episode,
though I don't recall any.
