Rockstar Supernova is an Insult to True Rock Fans
First, let me say that I actually enjoy RSSN. The show is exciting and
feels honest. Definitely a breath of fresh air from the American Idol
bubble gum fluff.
However, many rock fans will not watch the show, or take it seriously.
And for good reason.
For one thing, the song selection is a huge insult. Every week has
featured either a Nirvana or Coldplay song. One might assume that
these bands are the greatest in the world by judging the show. The
show ignores the countless rock classics, and repeats the same songs.
I believe, "Bring Me to Life" has been done 3 times already. What
about Led Zeppelin? Sabbath? Priest? Metallica? And 80's rock? I
would love to hear some Def Leppard. Supernova keeps telling the
singers that they want them to crush it and rock, but how can they will
the song selection is Cindi Lauper and REM? The show was able to work
with the weak redundant song selection last year because INXS is more
pop than rock. Coldplay is not rock, and Nirvana is not the greatest
rock band of all time.
The show also fails with rock fans because the notion of choosing your
lead singer in a contest feels cheap and gimmicky. I mean, what if
Supernova actually ended up hating all the performers? What if none of
them are right for the band? Well, they still have to choose a singer.
A factory made rock band. I'm sure Van Halen and Alice n Chains
passed on the show for this reason. Although, I think the show
actually would have helped VH get back in the spotlight.
The show is also an insult to the real genuine rock talents out there
who are only known locally. Many of the performers feel like rock
posers as if they studied a rule book first, and hit the tattoo shop
the night before the show aired. Dana was the worst offender of this
even admitting that she finally got a tat, and tried chugging a beer
before her performance. She belongs on Nashville Star, not here. In
fact, Dilana and Lukas feel like the only true rockers. Many people
point out that Lukas can't sing. Since when did vocal talent become
a requirement for being a rock lead singer? Certainly not for the lead
singer of System of the Down.

All fair points I guess. The show is entertainment.

I don't think many fans are excited about Supernova. The band will
most likely be forgotten within a year.

I don't think I'd buy the album, but as I said, it's entertainment.
I fully agree this is not the way to select a singer for a band, and
that odds are high that SN will be a one album, one tour thing, and so
on.
