They couldn't be doing this in deference to to the World Series since
Football can easily beat baseball in the ratings. Could they?

No, seriously.
I'm not joking.

Yes, they are. ESPN did the same thing the last few years. It's a
matter of respect between football & baseball. Note, too, that ABC
didn't have a prime-time football game last night, either, choosing a
doubleheader in the afternoon, for the same reason.

Yup, absolutely right. This has been going on for a few years. LOL,
not like the
award shows where other networks go out of their way to schedule
shows to impact
the ratings.

Its kinda an unwritten agreement between football and baseball.
Football gives up Sunday night and the World Series takes a travel day
on Monday night (which is why the WS starts on a Saturday night).

Of course, it wasn't always thus. The Series used to start on a
weeknight (Tuesday), but then some genius decided that it would
start---and end if the series went the full 7 games---on a Saturday to
maximize ratings. It's all about the ratings and the money.

Tiny nitpick: a seven-game Series will, barring rainouts, end on
a Sunday.

And if it does go 7 games, a lot of people will probably be flipping
back and forth between football and baseball.
