Smoking will soon be outlawed?

Speaking of smoking...I was watching Nickolodeon last weekend and they had
some cartoon where the main character had a cigarette in his mouth the whole
show. It wasn't lit, but it was definitely drawn to look like a cigarette.
It wasn't an old cartoon, either. It was one of those new Japanese
Manga-like cartoons. What gives? Shouldn't parents be trying to ban stuff
like that from the airwaves rather than 'bad words' during nighttime TV
shows that kids will never watch?

Parents should supervise their own kids instead of trying to control
what everyone else has access to.

So you're saying not even children's cartoons should have standards?

I am really surprised that parents band together to try and stamp out 'bad
stuff' on primetime TV shows (on after kids should be in bed), but let
cartoons where the hero has a cigarette dangling out of his mouth the whole
episode go on stations like Nickelodeon without a care.

David...

I can't watch those Japanese (or Japanese-inspired) cartoons for more
than a few minutes without getting a headache. Maybe that's the trick
to keep parents from complaining.

You may be on to something. Some dipwad tunes in to Studio 60 at 10 PM on a
school night, sees an 'anti-Christian' comment and throws a fit about how
children need to be protected from that stuff. Meanwhile, they don't pay
any attention to the shows their kids actually watch, so those shows (full
of violence, scantily clad women, and cigarette smoking heroes) go
unnoticed. This is what I don't understand about the people that get all
active with an agenda. If they are going to have an agenda, have one that
makes sense: protect kids from something bad that kids might actually
watch.
