"Hiros"
10-23-06 Heroes

Ian J. Ball...
You're late... >:/

georgeavalos0...
Computer malfunction. Plus, it's just as well. I finally settled on a
method for the scoring benchmarks, but it took a little while to fig
something.

pv+usenet...
3.5. Lots of pieces moving around on the board. *

5 stars (Coco Miller & Kelly Miller)

0-1 stars (Jeen Han & Sunny Han)

jewahe...
4.5. I had to deduct points for Nathan flashing that 100-watt smile yet
again.

Otherwise, this episode hooked me from the minute Nathan jetted away
from Horn Rims and the Eraser, through Peter's white-eyed freakout, all
the way to Niki and Ando meeting up. For the first time, I really
thought that there was a story starting to come together out of all of
this.

David B...
4.33, I'm really loving this show. It's the new Lost.

Dave Smith...
4.75. Best episode yet, with each one getting better and better. I
loved how the end mirrored last week's ending.

Electric Frog...
3.5 Probably the weakest episode so-far but still had plenty of bright spots

Paul Farrington...
Hmm, I thought this was better paced than last week.

4.5 stars from me. Nathan's blast-off was a treat, although my wife
pointed out that maybe that was what they were trying to goad him into
doing, which hadn't occurred to me. And although Hiro's very improved

~consul...
That is a very good point. We've seen them show up at points where the others are using
their powers. It must be to get them to use their powers, catalogue/confirm it, and erase
their presence from the subjects memory.

English was distracting, I enjoyed the exchange between Nathan and him.

I have a question. What did Nikki say to Micha in response to him saying
"my dad didn't do anything?" I watched it twice and couldn't make it out.

Pokee...
5.0 from me.

I am still trying to pick my jaw up off the ground. AMAZING TV! Who
knew TV could be this good? It was so good, I was talking to my
TV...and that doesn't happen to me often!

I can't even remember a TV show having a debut as strong as this. And
it keeps getting BETTER each week!

Ian J. Ball...
OK, I get the second one, but I'm blanking on the first pair...

Ian J. Ball...
Are these the two that have that Disney Channel movie about them?...

cloud dreamer...
4.8

Easily the best new show of the season.

georgeavalos0...
That would be telling. But Coco is no common name. ;)

Default User...
They would seem to be basketball players.

Tony Calguire...
Hey... I KNEW I recognized their names! They're from Minnesota. :-)

Default User...
I gather "twins that work and play well together", vice the Han sisters.

Gio...
4 stars. These Japanese guys make me laugh, but I noticed I'm watching
too much anime.

Lizard...
3.75

Possibly the weakest episode so far -- entertaining, but didn't really
go anywhere or resolve much of anything. Of course, the introductory
pace couldn't be kept up forever, but, even so, it was a bit of a let
down.

Certain plot holes are looming larger. For example, Hiro now speaks
English VERY well, given he couldn't speak it at all a day earlier. I
took nine months of Japanese, and I could not manage nearly as
coherent an exchange. Jin on Lost has been stuck with nothing but

Ubiquitous...
That's because that was Future!Hiro speaking to Peter.

Lizard...
No, I'm talking about Hiro in the diner.

Future!Hiro I can buy -- any sort of explanation is possible for his
perfect fluency, from taking ten years to study while everyone else
was taking a single breath, to someone using some sort of
language-transfer power on him, to him sticking a fish in Peter's ear
when he wasn't looking. But Present!Hiro should, at best, be able to
say 'do-you-speak-jap-an-ese' in an incomphrensibly thick accent at
this point.

markr1000...
He was talking about Diner!Hiro not Future!Hiro.

weberm...
Hiro did NOT speak fluent English in the dinner, but now that you mention
it, he seemed to know more than he used to. I am still puzzled as to why
he doesn't make his friend talk to Isaac on the phone.

David Johnston...
Actually given that we now know that Hiro can speak English, there's
no reason for Hiro not to make the calls. His friend wouldn't do any
better at being convincing.

Ubiquitous...
Except he doesn't know how to say "NYC is going to be destroyed by a nuke!"
in English (right now he only seems able to speak simple conversational
tourist-English).

Mmm, Milo sure brings The Pretty...

english speakers for three months and can just about manage to say
'Hello'. I had no trouble with future Hiro speaking perfect English --
he had as much time as needed to learn it.

Darrel Knutson...
Totally unbelievable. I'm an American who has been learning German since
1973 and have lived in Germany for over 20 years. And yet Hiro's English
is a whole lot better than my German. If you don't start young, you'll

Rick...
Yes, because NO ONE is better at learning languages than YOU...

Darrel Knutson...
This is plainly not true, but I do have 25 years of language teaching
experience and have heard hundreds of non-native speakers of the languages
I speak. In every case where the accent is accepted as correct by native
speakers the learner started before entering puberty.

There's very little chance that Hiro could just pick it up, unless it's
another one of the nifty abilities he somehow acquires.

Dano...
Yeah...that's much more far-fetched than teaching himself to bend time and
space in order to travel through both...by using only his mind. Thanks for
your cogent analysis.

David Johnston...
So far as we know, Hiro has no language superpower, and they seem to
be limited to one power per customer.

David Johnston...
A telepath may get tired of listening to him talk one day and just
give him an instant lesson. Or he may have been talking to alternate
Hiro from the timeline where Hiro moved to the states when he was
four. It appears though that Hiro is already more capable of speaking
english than he appeared to be. Although maybe only to one of the
other heroes.

never get the accent right, no matter how much time you are given.

~consul...
The actor knows English very well, and he moved to the US it thing when he was like 5.
When LOST started, so many folks were talking how Jin's Korean was horribly accented. How

~consul...
I mean how is Hiro's japanese. :)

Dano...
Well...for the sake of a somewhat silly argument...if he can travel through
time and space, might he not have had unlimited time to learn English?

is Hiro's?

I still give the show a 4.9.

suzee...
`Perfect' English? When he was in the future, yeah. But when he ran into

Beowulfie...
I had no problem with his being able to speak english when he came from
the future. My problem was being able to speak pretty darn good when he
was talking to the candidate.

Nathan at the diner, it was still pretty sketchy.

Lizard...
Right. But a LOT better than anyone whose super-power wasn't learning
langauges should be after, at most, a few hours of learning a fewp
hrases phonetically.

suzee...
"Ooohh, waffles!"

Cracked me up....

Ubiquitous...
Not any more -- As of last week, we discovered that Jin understands
English too.

Didja notice that stylized "F" on Niki 2.0's back?

pkj0891...
4.0 It took me a few weeks to get it and to appreciate the whole
comic book thing, but now that I have, I'm liking this show a lot.

Pidge...
4.7
A nice sprinkling of all the characters.
