Rob Jensen...
Nope. Watching you squirm and fume and contort at my ability to admit
mistakes -- a quality that you lack -- is quite entertaining.

telenovels...
Uh.... I have often admitted I made mistakes. Like here:
Rob> Studio 60 is not a serial.
ME:> Oops. Sorry about that. I don't watch the show, but I thought I
had heard it was a continuing story like Heroes or Jericho or Vanished.

Maybe you Rob would do well to learn some Manners and Civility instead
of saying things like, "informing yourself before you spout inaccurate
drivel "

AKA stop acting like an uncivilized barbarian.

Michael Ikeda...
The show never really gets a chance to test that, at least not for
more than an episode or two.

(This week is Thanksgiving week and the American Music awards on ABC.
And "American Idol" starts up after the December hiatus.)

Incidentally, ABC is apparently considering running another edition
of "Dancing With The Stars" in the spring. And even considering
running it in the same time slot. Which means that six or so new
episodes of GG could be airing against "American Idol", "Dancing With
the Stars" AND NCIS. Talk about a time slot from hell...

Rob Jensen...
Gg's been running this season so far with ratings about the same as it
did against American Idol. IMO, Gg has a solid core audience that
follows it no matter what and the part of the Gg audience that
previously abandoned Gg when Idol was on and watches DwtS now will now
be split between Idol and DwtS. Either Idol and DwtS will cannibalize
each other's audiences or, like the Grey's/CSI showdown, more viewers
will flock to the two shows from elsewhere (from basic cable, most

Michael Ikeda...
I tend to agree that GG's ratings would likely hold up well even
under those circumstances.

Although I think I'd rather not have to test that hypothesis...

Rob Jensen...
Well, we've already kinda seen a preview of it when Gg was up against
both DwtS and House for about the first month or so. Gg held up then,
too. I don't think the show is going to lose any viewers that it
wasn't going to lose -- and that weren't worth losing -- anyway.

Conversely, NCIS is apparently down 2 million viewers from last year's
averages in the same timeslot, apparently due to DwtS. It'll be
interesting to see how many more viewers it'll lose when Idol and DwtS
are in the same timeslot.

likely).

Obveeus...
Do you think that the 'larger' audience comes from basic cable or do you
think it is really the same set of people recording two shows? I tend to
think that, more and more, the last hour of primetime takes a hit as people
do their 'same day viewing' of whatever show they recorded earlier in
primetime.

Michael Ikeda...
VM's season average in the fast Nationals (excluding the episode that
ran after a GG rerun) is roughly 2.0 (based on the ratings from
thefutoncritic.com). 1.8 probably isn't that much (if at all)
outside the range of random fluctuation. For that matter, it

Obveeus...
Your numbers all all subject to debate. You must know that it is only
'opinion' of some that groups are over/under represented, which was my
original point.

telenovels...
If the U.S. Census says there are 12% blacks, then that's what Nielsen
goes by. There's no better source then the government's census.

Obveeus...
The US Census is done once every 10 years. Counts in between are estimates
and you quoted a 2004 source. Since your 2004 source shows a decline in the
percentage population for Blacks (from 2000), you should probably be able to

telenovels...
.

(1) A decline in percentage does NOT mean a decline in population.
Blacks could still be increasing, but other groups (asians, hispanics)
are increasing at a faster rate, thereby decreasing blacks as a
percentage.

(2) You're missing the point I'm tying to make: - Nielsen is simply
following the U.S. Census data. Nielsen is following the most-accurate
data available to them. They are not purposefully trying to distort
the numbers... their customers would not stand for that.

Obveeus...
You are claiming to have proof that they are over sampling. If you have it,
I would guess that their customers have it. If their customers 'would not
stand for it', then the situation would be corrected. hence, you are likely
wrong.

(3) Unfortunately I can't find the website where I pulled the 2004
figures, but I did find some 2000 figures.

They show the black population was 12.3%. Nielsen samples 12.7%.
Which means that they are OVERsampling, not undersampling (as you
falsely claimed).

Obveeus...
You are making assumtions not based on the facts. You are now comparing the
2000 census number with a 2006 number and claiming that there is an
inaccuracy without anything to base that claim on. Why is it you think you
*know* that the %black population has not changed from 12.3 to 12.7 over the
last 6 years?

I hope we're done now.
This is silly & unimportant.

Obveeus...
Your claims to know exact numbers are unimportant since they are wrong. The
general concept (what I put forward) that some groups feel Nielsen is
under/over reporting is all that needed to be said. Since it was said, we
should be done now.

see why I might question how accurate it is. If you add in the fact that
you claimed Hispanics were about 5% of the population, you can see why your
numbers would be completely disregarded in their accuracy.

Obveeus...
Did you notice that the sentence you responded to started with the word
'eventually'?

telenovels...
.

Well if you mean the year 2100, then yeah, I agree. ;-) But I doubt
it will happen anytime within the next twenty years. It would be too
huge of an undertaking to do it in this decade.

At one point, computers were too expensive for home use. Not so, now.

telenovels...
20 years ago personal computers like Atari or TI or Commodore (my
first) cost about the same as now. The price hasn't dropped any lower.
So your statement is in error

Obveeus...
Why make up an arbitrary time segment (20 years) and try to make your claim
based upon that time segment? You are being dishonest in your response.

.

Obveeus...
Eventually everyone will have cable/box that can monitor what program they
are watching. They will also vote through the box. The box will be their
'phone' as well. Every single person, except for you (still griping about
channel unavailability no doubt), will have it.

probably isn't much outside the range of random fluctuation from 2.1.

(As I mentioned in another post, both VM and GG were about at their
season averages, although both were just below them.)

David E. Milligan...
I read something about only 20 eps instead of 22 (????)

Michael B....
I read the same thing (from Ausiello).
What's that about?

Michael Ikeda...
Basically VM and OTH originally had a 13 episode committment which
has now been increased to 20 episode for VM and 21 for OTH. It isn't
entirely clear at this point whether this is the final number or
whether both will be increased to the standard 22.

Rob Jensen...
It means that the network is *almost* confident enough to give the
given series its back nine, but they're shaving an episode or two off
in an effort to be cheapskates about it. Crossing Jordan had an
episode shaved off last season's order and a few other series (mostly
on NBC) also had between two and five episodes cut from their
back-nine's last season for the same reason.

Michael B.
They're not polling me! GG, VM and Smville are the only three CW shows
I watch.

Rob Jensen...
IMO, Gg pulls in a substantial number of viewers from outside of its
target demos (W18-34) while VM pulls in very few viewers from outside
of the target demos. These out-of-demo viewers are viewers that IMO
don't like what they see from VM and/or are regular viewers of House
and The Unit.
