"A lot of pandering started going on, and you'd see soldiers and the
American flag in every video. It became a sickening display of
ultra-patriotism."

Rich you're a citizen of a country whose ethos includes an implicit
rejection of the "American way". Why not deal with that instead of
other people's patriotism?
|
"The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the
necessity for patriotism," Maines resumes, through gritted teeth. "Why
do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why?
You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the
whole country... I don't see why people care about patriotism." - UK

She's right, patriots are unblanced fanatics. Usually the kinds who
start wars to force their way of life on others.

Rich, how many times a day do you beat off to the chicks?
trotsky...

Rich had his genitalia removed for a "science experiment". He keeps
them in a very small jar of formaldehyde next to his bed.

Your comeback is an intelligent as Maine's "Duh, I don't see why people
are patriotic."
trotsky...

Yeah, you go with that, Rich. Everyone else will just go with the truth.

There is no one else where you're concerned since you have no friends

Pretty courageous to talk that way with all the frothy-mouthed
jingoists out there, eager to jump on every bit of free expression that
doesn't agree with their own limited viewpoints. Yup, that ole First
Amendment sure doesn't count with some folks. Gotta tread a very narrow

When I read a news article recently in which a huge percentage of
Americans didn't know what was actually in the First Amendment, I
thought, "that couldn't be right." But I've been reading more and more
comments like the one you just made, and I think maybe article might
have been right after all. Because, I regret to say, you clearly don't
know what the First Amendment is all about.
The First Amendment is designed to prevent the GOVERNMENT from stopping
individuals from expressing their opinion. It doesn't prevent one group
of individuals (in this case, people you call jingoists) from
publically criticising another group of individuals (in this case, the
Dixie Chicks). Just as Natalie Maines can't be prosecuted by the
government merely for expressing her opinion, neither can the
"jingoists" be prosecuted for publically calling her an asshole (which
they probably will). Nobody's First Amendment rights are being stifled
here. Try not to cry.
As to the substance of what she said, the irony is that she might not
even be able to make her comments about the lack of necessity for
patriotism, except that in the past a lot of people had so much
patriotism that they were willing to fight - on the battlefield and in
government legislatures of various kinds - to make sure that we had
laws (and amendments, etc.) that allowed free speech. *Those* people
were "pretty courageous." Natalie Maines? Not so much.

strait to keep some folks from jumping up, red-faced and sweaty, to
point out that *someone* out there isn't in agreement with them. Kinda
funny. Really. Gettin' all hot 'n' bothered 'bout a singer's right to
speak her mind.
