CliffB...
I'm loading up for gifts and such and wondering if there are any
recommendations for especilly good box set collections out there. I
just picked up the Classic Comedies collection

Flasherly...
Not sure how it's packaged, but thoroughly enjoyed the British
production of Graves' - I, Claudius. Would of course bore some.
Nexflix thing, perhaps a couple episodes per disc - not sure, been
awhile. Cosmos, Carl Sagan, besides lots of other educational style
documentary series. Enjoyable, but rather have drama or sci-fi/fantasy
(Tolkien, Alien Quadrilogy, British SciFi Ch. Dune 3 episodes, etc). A

David Oberman...
Dozens of episodes from the excellent series "Foyle's War," starring
Michael Kitchen, are available on Region 1 in boxes. It's worth
watching every single episode.

definate on Criterions and maay a good classic put to film under that
label.

A sure-fire winner. Also looking at the Complete Thin Man, the Alec
Guinness collection and/or the Ealing Studios collection. The

Sean O'Hara...
If you're looking at those, also check out the Peter Sellers collection.

The best boxsets I've encountered this year:

- Humphrey Bogart Signature Collection Volume 2 [1]
- The Jayne Mansfield Collection
- Bette Grable Collection
- Sam Peckinpah Collection
- John Ford/John Wayne Collection
- Batjac Suspsense Collection
- Cary Grant Collection (the one Sony with Holiday, His Girl Friday,
etc.)
- Ultimate Flint Collection

There are also a few I've picked up but haven't had a chance to dig
into:

- Preston Sturges Collection
- Oliver Stone Ultimate Collection ($34.99 at F.Y.E. this week)
- Gary Cooper Signature Collection
- The Premiere Frank Capra Collection

[1] Volume 1 and the Bogie & Bacall Collection simply repackage
discs that were released individually.

Casavettes box looks a little pricey.

Anyon have other recs? There's so much great stuff out there. Was also
looking at some of the Criterion stuff, the Sam Fuller issues, although
I don't think they have those collected. Some of the individual
Criterions have so many extras they're almost a box though.

David Oberman...
The two Marx Brothers sets -- one of the MGM films & one of the
Paramount films. The new Brando collection contains "Teahouse of the
August Moon," a warm, funny, mainstreamy film that most of today's TV
audience has probably never seen or heard about.

is there a Phil Silvers Box? Going to check............

Derek Janssen...
There's Sgt. Bilko, Season 1, since you did ask.

I would recommend
GARY COOPER-Universal has a box that includes Cooper's 30's hits
BEAU GESTE, LIVES OF A BENGAL LANCER and THE GENERAL DIED AT DAWN,
among others. WB's collection includes SERGEANT YORK, THE
FOUNTAINHEAD,
DALLAS, SPRINGFIELD RIFLE and THE WRECK OF THE MARY DEARE. Extras
include a late-80's TNT documentary on Cooper hosted by Clint Eastwood.

BUSTER KEATON-Kino Video's box has all the Keaton silent features
(except THE CAMERAMAN), plus shorts and a rarities disc called KEATON
PLUS.
TCM's box contains THE CAMERAMAN, SPITE MARRIAGE and Keaton's first
talkie
feature FREE AND EASY. There's also a Columbia 2-reel shorts DVD set,
but due to the
uneven quality of the films (the best I saw were "The Pest From The
West" and "Nothing
But Trouble") it is better to rent it through Netflix.

PRESTON STURGES-Universal has a box with almost all of Sturges'
Paramount features
between 1940 and 1945 (THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S CREEK is available as a
single disc
from Paramount.).

WB's FILM NOIR boxes Volumes 1-3, which contain some of the best noir
from RKO
and MGM circa the late 40's/early 50's. (see also WB's Bogart and
Bacall box, which
unfortunately doesn't add any new extras but collects their four
co-starring films).

FRANK CAPRA-A collection of selected Columbia 30's releases including
MR. DEEDS GOES
TO TOWN, MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, AMERICAN MADNESS and YOU CAN'T
TAKE IT WITH YOU.

Harkness...
If you have anyone who's brow is a little bit higher than Bilko...

John Harkness

CliffB...
Thanks for that one, interesting. I'm patiently waiting for the long
lost Bilko-Bunuel collaboration to surface........
