Seeking identity of US civil war tv series

Brad...
When I was in the USA around 1998 - 2002 I saw a mini-series on one
of the US cable-tv channels which struck me greatly; or at least
one part of it that I saw. I wonder if anyone can tell me what the
series was, so I can acquire it to watch properly?

It was about the American civil war, and the scene that I particularly
remember and admire encompassed a Union defence of an important hill.
One of the chief protagonists was an officer - captain, major - in charge
of a number of squads, and I was particularly impressed in how he/they
repelled several charges of the hill by the confederate soldiers, with
the captain taking charge between waves, calling his squad leaders
over, giving them his instructions - wheel left, move over this way,
etcetera. And especially 'they must not take this hill'. Which had
been impressed on him by his superior also.

I loved the feeling I got of his prowess in military
thinking and strategy, even with the limited weapons of the time.
Needless to say they held the hill, and afterwards his unit was
sent to another place where they expected easy duty (and *possibly*
they thwarted an unexpected major assualt, I'm not sure; I didn't
have a chance to really watch past the 'hill battle').

I *think* one of his subordinates was his brother.

I don't think I remember much else, but hopefully my dim recollection
of this scene and the period in which I saw it might jog someone's
memory? I'd appreciate any replies (to the group; like most of us
I fear putting my correct e-mail address in my 'From' address).

Many thanks, Brad.
