Why does Madonna speak with a British accent?

Lots of other Americans live in England but they don't sound like the
Queen. Even Gwynneth Paltrow still manages to sound like a Yank. So
why does Madonna always sound like she has a turd in her mouth?

She's also married to a Brit so it would be easy to pick it up. I
pickup the mannerisms and speaking patterns of the people I'm around
but it goes away when I'm away from them. I imagine if I lived w/a
Brit in Britain, the accent might stick around.

Although I think it's interesting that Terri Irwin (Steve Irwin the
crocodile hunter's wife) has been living in Australia for 14 years and
doesn't seem to have a trace of that strong Aussie accent, nor does she
seem to use any Australian slang.

Not necessarily. My sister lives in Australia and has picked up some
Oz-sounding pronunciation which she retains even when she comes back
to the US or is talking with me on the phone. When she's here people
routinely ask her what country she's from. However, she always sounds
very American to Australian ears.

A buddy of mine (from a town on Cape Cod) went in the Marines...came home
from boot camp sounding like he'd been a southerner his whole life.

required for her movie roles. So, no surprise there.

for gawds sake!

The other evening I saw her being interview in NYC, suddenly her old accent
Detroit-style/street was back.
