The purpose of tv is not just to entertain, but to air 20 minutes worth
of advertising each hour (to provide the tv for free). What are your

Mike Henry...
No you were right first time. It's just to entertain. (That high
percentage of advertising may fund some channels, but it's not the
"purpose" of TV for us viewers!)

Mike Henry...
Don't have any. Don't watch any. I just watch the programmes and I get
to keep the hundreds of hours that I used to waste watching adverts in a
previous life. Since I got my TiVo over 5 years ago I haven't watched a
single advert live at home. It's great, you should try not watching
adverts too!

rst...
I wouldn't mind watching ads if they were funny, but I live in the U.S.
We are forbidden to be creative here. "Bland" is norm. It is
actually encouraged.

Not only that-- in the U.S., if an ad is supposed to be "funny", the
"joke" is always explained, or exaggerated-- so the masses will
understand that it's supposed to be a "funny" ad. Then, the next day
at work, they can talk about the funny ad they saw on TV.

Mike Henry...
They might want more control over what I can do, but they won't get it.

Mike Plowman...
The TiVo has no software updates here in the UK but we are guranteed a
lifetime service. they might foist such fol de rol on the plebby Sky
plus owners but wem the TiVo elite will bypass such things. :-)

They aren't going to rewrite the software in my TiVo, or for that matter
my VCR, or everyone else's DVD recorder or PVR.

telenovels...
What happens when your hardware dies and you need a new one? That will
include the software to stop fast-forwarding through commercials.

The latest, in-store DTV sets have already been upgraded from "no
protection" to include computer chips to block viewing of pirated
digital data. (u.s.) There's nothing to stop DVRs or Tivos from

I'm talking about the UK.

receiving the same computer-chip upgrade, via government mandate.

videonovels...
.

Funny. I would think the UK is the *first* place it would happen,
given how the government likes to control television. I can easily
imagine the Parliament mandating that all TVs include a computer chip
to forbid using them, unless you're paid your $200 a year tv tax.

Mike Henry...
LOL! Won't happen here.

Then when you or I experience a broken recorder, and we go buy a new
2007-model-year DVR or Tivo -wham- suddenly we can't fast-forward.

Mike Henry...
Which part of "In the case of TiVo, only the Series 1 platform is
supported in the UK" are you having trouble with? The last software
upgrade we needed upgrade was 2002, it works, and there isn't going to
be another upgrade.

videonovels...
Uh huh. "Nobody needs more than 640 kilobytes." - Bill Gates. Foolish
words. There will be an upgrade someday. Maybe not until 2010, but at
some point, you'll find yourself with a Tivo on top of your set that
can't fast-forward.

- Aside: VCRs and DVDs don't record hi-definition 720 or 1080 signals.
Not a solution.

I've been enjoying it for over 5 years and will continue to do so for
many more to come.

Why add an extra letter where it's not needed? In fact, the original
Latin from which the word is derived, has no u. It's simply "favor".
No u.

joeh...
I can't remember any I like. By contrasts, I can recall very clearly
the ones I hate, but it would take far too much time to list them all
here (they include, but are not limited to, any relating to PCWorld, or
DFS, or mobile phones, or cars, or beer, or DIY or supermarkets)

The power of advertising!

I like the new Captain Kirk ad where he's hawking new Big-screen tvs:
Chekov: "Shields up sir?"
Kirk: "Shields, shields, always with the shields."

Kirk: "...choosing this set is eminently logical."
Spock: (raises eyebrow)
Kirk: "What? I can't use that line?" (rolls eyes)

AND:

The suv / kiddy show commercial:
Dodge Spokeswoman: "What do you think of our new suv?"
Blue Fuzzy Puppet: "Don't take this wrong, but it doesn't make me feel
all warm & fuzzy inside."
Pink Unicorn: "Yeah; it's all dark and disturbing."
Huggable Bear : "It's neither cuddly; nor wuddly."

Shy Ewok: "Frankly it scares the _____ out of me."
