"Better Halves"
10-30-06 Heroes

pv+usenet...
3.0 for actually revealing a few things, but they need to get the story
moving a bit faster, at least every once in a while. *

Jonathan Roberts...
I'll give it a 3.8. As for Nikki, can you say "Freud"?

weberm...
Four stars.

Is Niki 2.0 her Id?

Paul Farrington...
That's what occurred to me, too. But in many ways it doesn't fit. In
addition to some interest in gratification of desire (c.f. her return to
Nathan's hotel room), she seems supremely concerned with self
preservation and fiercely protective of Micha. Are those Id qualities?

Side note: if self preservation and protecting Micha became mutually
exclusive, I wouldn't bet on Micha.

Also, if we go with the Id analogy, where is the superego that regular
Nikki (the ego) is supposed to be guided by?

I probably have this all mixed up, as I don't really understand Freud
well. Feel free to correct as necessary.

- Paul

BTR1701...
I'm very confused as to what exactly is going on with her. Are there
actually two physical Nikis or just one?

David B...
I think there's just one Nikki. I think they just showed two Nikkis to make
it more visually interesting by having her two personalities interact rather
than just showing Nikki talking by herself.

EGK...
After the change, fix the color on your monitor until she turns green. :)

Ubiquitous...
She's obviously two seperate entities who swap places, one has a tatoo

Eric D. Berge...
Ah! She's Miraclewoman.

Donna B...
She's Disassociative Identity Disorder to the max.

wdstarr...
Without the pyrotechnics when switching bodies.

Or was that just a glitch in the original three man-made[1] Miracle
people?

1: With a *lot* of help from only-somewhat-understood alien tech,
of course.

E Brown...
That's what I thought of, too. What will give us a better
explanation of her powers is when she meets Peter...
epbrown

Ubiquitous...
Who?

Eric D. Berge...
The female adjunct of Miracleman
(originally in the UK).

I think of the original Captain Mar-vel and Rick Jones...

Disneygeek...
I feel old that I realize that "Captain Mar-vel" is the original!

Clell Harmon...
Not the original Marvel, but most specifically the original Mar-vel....

on her back and the other does not. Isaac (?) was wiping off the paint
from her painting because she changed while he was painting her and he
went back to cover it up.

Auzerais...
Great observation. I totally missed the point about the painting vs the
tatoo.
I was wondering what the meaning of the hidden design in the painting
was.
Thanks for the clarification.

When she dropped out of the ceiling with the money and was confronted by
her husband, she "turned" from good to bad and it was like she actually
disappeared and reappeared instantaneously in a slightly different
position.

Does one Niki wink out of physical existence and the other one pop in?
Or is she just two different personalities in the same physical body?
And if it's the same physical body, how does she suddenly go from normal
woman to superhuman strength?

Of all the Heroes, she's the most troublesome.

Disneygeek...
I guess that would make her Rick Jones/Captain Marvel as well as Hulk!

Ken from Chicago...
Think the Hulk only with less muscle and less green skin. She has delusions
when she sees her reflection.

I've been suspicious about Molander's female friend for some time now.
I'm glad to see they were confirmed.

5 stars (Princess Grace Kelly)

0-1 stars (Henry Stuart)

Electric Frog...
3.5. It's been better but still watchable

BTR1701...
If DL is Nikis husband, his power seems more akin to Kitty Pryde than
anyone else. (At least going by what I've seen in the movies. I never
read any of the comics.)

markr1000...
Which is why you don't know that Shadowcat was Kitty's rarely used
superhero handle.

And if these people have gotten their powers through natural evolution
(as suggested by all the talk at the beginning by the Indian professor),
then what are the odds that two people out of billions with special
abilities would end up married to each other?

David Johnston...
Extremely high given how often they seem to bump into each other by
"chance" once their powers manifest.

I just hope that since they were married, that doesn't mean their kid is
some kind of "special" super-child. I am so very weary of the

David Johnston...
We already know he has a superpower.

Ubiquitous...
We do?

David Johnston...
How many ten year olds do you know who can "rebuild a motherboard"?

Ubiquitous...
More than you think, obviously.
I thought you might be referring to how perceptive that kid seems at times.

"savior-child" cliche that plagues so much of science fiction these days.

Paul Farrington...
4 stars.

It was a difficult show to watch, because of all the betrayals, and
because the structure was kind of static: setup -> betrayal, setup ->
betrayal, setup -> betrayal, etc. But the dialog between Nikki and
Mirror!Nikki was good, and also finally seeing Micha's faith in his dad
justified was rewarding. And DL does tricks! So maybe Micha is special
in a way that other special people aren't special, since both his
parents are special. All the voice-over about evolution would be pretty
out of place if none of these special traits are passed on to offspring.

- Paul

Lizard...
3.75

The pieces keep moving around the chessboard. We're getting a lot of
clear answers to things, like the nature of Nicki's powers, whether or
not Eve is a spy (duh...), and so on, but there's a stalled feeling to
the story. There was very little this episode we didn't see before --
Nicki blacks out, Hiro and friend bumble around Vegas, Peter tries to
figure out what's going on.

It's time to resume the forward momentum. If Lost's weakness is
constantly introducing new questions, Heroes' weakness is not
introducing enough.

OK, anyone who was surprised that HRG found some fake parents, raise
their hands. Also, I've got a great bridge to sell you.

William George Ferguson...
I would still bet that more people were surprised with that than with Eden
turning out to be working for HRG Bennet.

Rob Jensen...
I was *far* more surprised about Eden than about the fake parents.

-- Rob

David B...
4.25, too bad that Mohinder's girl was working with Claire's dad. That
was just too obvious. We still don't know if he's evil. So far it
appears he just wants to study people with powers. Is it for good or
nefarious reasons?

Ubiquitous...
NBC is really trying to make us think he's evil, aren't they?

lionelhutz6...
Reminds me a lot more of JMS's work on Rising Stars and Supreme Power.
