UPN or WB station takes over CW in your area?

Ar Q...
In many areas, people have both UPN and WB stations. Which one will take
over the new CW station in your area?

Zombie Elvis...
Chicago:

WB = WGN 9 -> CW
UPN = WPWR 50 -> MyNetworkTV

Steven L....
Go here:

ANIM8Rfsk...
Phoenix:

WB becomes the CW.

Our horrible UPN station becomes MyNetwork, which means I never have to
watch it again.

Casey McDonald's Guidance Counsellor, Ian J. Ball...
I thot you were a Bo Derek fan - if you're a Bo Derek fan, you *will*
have to watch MyNetworkTV! HA!!

Ar Q...
And here in Pittsburg(h), our UPN19 station keeps reminding us that it will
become the new CW, not WB22. That is odd because of the two independent
stations then, Channel 22 is the better one with more viewers and it got to
choose WB first when the two new networks are born. I have a strong feeling
that the whole CW thing is that CBS wants a second channel so they bought
WB. It is an acquisition, not a merge.

David Levy...
You aren't making any sense.

1. CBS already owns UPN.
2. Channel 19 is owned by CBS (which wasn't the case in 1995), so the
CW affiliation was automatic (because channel 22 is owned by Sinclair,
not Tribune).
3. Warner Bros. will own 50% of the new network.

Ar Q...
I still think this is the move for CBS to create a diversion to avoid
antitrust law. Once FCC is off their back, CBS will buy the remaining 50%
ownership from WB. They might have agreement already.

4. Compared to the number of UPN affiliates, the CW network includes
more than twice as many WB affiliates.

Brian Thorn...
Never had a dedicated UPN station, and WB only since 2003, so we in
lovely San Angelo will finally get to see Veronica Mars at an hour
other than Midnight Sunday/Monday.

ANIM8Rfsk...
Hey, we HAD a dedicated UPN station, and VM still ended up at 2am. SO
looking forward to the CW!!!

Jorabi...
In Albany NY, the WB affiliate is owned by Tribune and will be a CW
station. It has changed its call letters from WEWB to WCWN.

The UPN affiliate (WNYA) is going to MNTV.

me...
both in my area are WB->CW. One UPN is digital only, which I don't
get, so I don't know what they're doing. The other I *think* is becoming
MyNetwork.

Sean Walsh...
WB56 in Boston and UPN28 in Providence/New Bedford are transfering to
CW in the fall.

UPN38 in Boston is going back to being an independent station (it's one
of very few that won't be joining the MyNetworkTV station being created
to take over those WB & UPN stations turned down by CW).

akjack...
I don't think MyNetworkTV was created to provide programming
to stations losing UPN or WB affiliation.

David Levy...
That's precisely why it was created. All of the Fox-owned UPN
stations were abruptly left without affiliation for the fall, so Fox
diverted some upcoming programming from syndication to a new
quasi-network (for the purpose of supplying replacement programming to
its own stations and other former UPN/WB affiliates).

akjack...
...

I may have been wrong about the original reason for MyNetworkTV,
but Fox owned UPN stations don't make up a majority of

David Levy...
Of course not! Only nine exist.

the new affiliates. Sinclair Group has the greatest number of
stations which will become MyNetworkTV stations.

David Levy...
Yes, and 15 of the 17 are WB/UPN affiliates.

There are quite a few independent stations that will become
affiliated with MyNetworkTV.

David Levy...
So far, there are 12 such stations (including Fox-owned KDFI), plus
one (WMYW) that does not yet exist.

There are about 33 stations that were previously independent
or had no affiliation. There are 9 UPN affiliates owned by Fox

David Levy...
You're counting digital subchannels (which are not separate stations).

Television Stations Group in this list...

David Levy...
Again, that's all of them.

Wasn't it created for the Fox owned stations that were losing their
programming due to the WB/UPN merger? Though no company is going to
turn down the opportunity to sell their product to other outlets. In
this case the other outlets are those stations that don't have a
network affiliation so they have plenty of open air time.

In the San Francisco market, CW will go to the current UPN affiliate
which is owned by CBS.

shawn...
In Atlanta's case the UPN station will become the CW station and the
WB station will carry the MyNetwork programming.

MyNetworkTV will reportedly be carried by independent KRON ch 4,
which lost NBC affiliation several years ago.

David Levy...
That's an atypical example.

The current WB20 channel will likely become an independent.

IIRC, CBS selected their network owned stations for CW affiliation
in a number of markets.

David Levy...
Excepting one station in each of the seven overlap markets, every
CBS-owned UPN affiliate and Tribune-owned WB affiliate will become a
CW affiliate. Four CBS-owned UPN affiliates and three Tribune-owned
WB affiliates are excluded, and the latter group (including Atlanta's
WATL, which is to be sold to Gannett) has affiliated with MyNetworkTV.

Casey McDonald's Guidance Counsellor, Ian J. Ball...
In San Diego, KSWB, The WB affiliate, is becoming the new CW affiliate.

Ian (Which I guess means it'll soon become KSCW...)

David Levy...
The WB/CW affiliate in the Wichita, Kansas market (formerly known as
KWCV) adopted the KSCW call letters in March (for obvious reasons).
