Heroes - NBC will cancel it - I'm not watching it

edrhodes...
You may certainly disagree, but I stand by my statement.

telenovels...
My happiness doesn't come from tv. I don't have to read Incomplete
Serials... there are plenty of other *finished* works for me to sample.

edrhodes...
I never said my happiness came from TV. Your happiness seems to come

Did you not see the PRAISE I gave to the X-Files and Angel? Also

edrhodes...
Actually, no I didn't. Angel ticked me off for writing out the demon
character. I liked him.

Anim8rFSK...
It's not like they had a lot of choice.

Jericho, and now that I've got caught-up, Heroes too (favorite
characters - the Asian duo).

from slamming shows you don't intend to watch because you don't like
what the network did to you in the past.

The shows you were watching had low ratings, they got cancelled. Heroes
appears to be a success, it's not going to get cancelled any time in
the near future. Eventurally it will be cancelled as all things on
television must. Unless it's become an icon a'la "Mary Tyler Moore
Show" or "M*A*S*H," then it's going to be cancelled with one or more
storylines unresolved. I'm not going to lose sleep over it.
NBC canceled Earth 2, leaving us viewers hanging with an unresolved

storyline.

NBC canceled Surface, leaving us viewers hanging with an unresolved
storyline.

Roger Thaat...
Kingpin was an NBC show too, wasn't it?

deering24...
...one hardly worth following, much less resolving... :b

This had potential, but was done in by the terminal

I bet they'll do the same with Heroes.
"Fool me once, shame on you;"
"Fool me twice, shame on ME." - Scotty

georgeavalos0...
Now I remember what was yet another thing that bugged me about your

videonovels...
.

How about you learn some manners, instead of belittling me and making
feel worthless?

georgeavalos0...
If you feel worthless, the fault, dear Troy, is not in your stars but
in yourself.

videonovels...
Typical response of a non-cultured individual lacking manners. You
probably pick your nose at the dinner table too. Or burp loudly and
offend everyone.

(BTW, Troy, I did NOT coin the operative part of the sentence. Nor did
Scotty)

empty-headed post.

You quoted the proverb as if it were coined by Mr. Scott. As if he

videonovels...
I am aware that Scotty did not create that proverb. I apologize if you
thought I was implying Scotty created the saying. (Although given your
lack of manners, I don't see why I should be apologizing.)

hadn't heard it himself in his fictional past. As if Scott would have
invented a proverb, centuries in the future, something we've heard for
years in the real world.

The actual origin is as follows:

**Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. (Chinese
Proverb)**

Sheesh, Troy, you really are a complete lackwit.

videonovels...
There you go again, demonstrating how barbarians & children act.

I'm not going to watch Heroes, just to see it get canceled with an
unresolved story.

bob smith...
For what its worth, they let Surface complete the entire season, and from a

Anim8rFSK...
I thought they cut them short but let them wrap it up?

and from a

certain point of view
the season ended with a reasonable amount of closure (The Apocalyptic Ending
archetype) instead
of a cliff hanger.

I mean really, how could Season 2 of Surface had continued in any way that
would have been more
satisfying than the imagined "new world" conclusion?

Anim8rFSK...
Well, large breasted girl's 'new world' remark was on a par with her
'LOOK IT'S GOT SIX LEGS' remark. The town got flooded. The water's
going to receed; it's not like somebody melted an icecap, it was just a
big wave. It's only a 'new world' in that it's, at the moment, wet.

Steven L....
Not at all. It's a "new world" in that the creatures are now at the top
of the oceanic food chain, with major effects on the ecological balance.
And the wave may have "introduced" them to the land, or at least to
inland waterways. Having such creatures swimming up and down the Hudson
River is going to make life for New Yorkers even more interesting.

ravenlynne...
Good for you. And thanks for starting a new thread to tell us.

videonovels...
If NBC cancels the show (and history shows they routinely cancel SF
serials), YOU and other viewers will ALSO get screwed. This thread is

Steven L....
I was a fan of "Surface," but I don't consider myself "screwed" just
because NBC canceled the show. The season (series) finale provided some
closure. In the meantime the show provided me with entertainment, which
is all I ever expected from that show. And I'm used to classic sci-fi
movies with ambiguous endings, so the fact that it left some questions
unanswered didn't bother me.

FYI, the longest-running soap operas like "As the World Turns" have been
on the air for 50 years! That means that some of the viewers who
watched Season 1 and remained loyal to the show, have likely passed away
by now, without ever seeing an "ending" to the serial. I doubt they
felt their lives were "screwed."

telenovels...
No, although soap storylines get resolved when the characters leave the
show (I'm told), so there is SOME internal resolution. Also, lack of
ending is the the reason I DON'T watch soaps. I like to have an ending
to my serials.

Same with games... I like endings to the story (which is why I didn't
like Final Fantasy Online). I like completion. I don't like shows
where the story either continues forever (soaps), or gets prematurely
canceled (surface) with dangling plotlines.

EFC/andromeda may have had lousy endings, but at least they HAD an
ending. Ditto DS9 and Babylon 5.

I felt closure.

I didn't have that closure with Surface, Invasion, Earth2, or Space
Above and Beyond. Very disappointing.

Dano...
EFC and Andromeda were so bad by the time they ended, that it didn't matter
at all. I didn't even bother with EFC. It wasn't remotely what it started
out to be. Andromeda was all over the place and I was relieved to have the
plug pulled, but I liked some characters enough to stay till the vague
ending.

not just abut me, but about all of us.

et472...
Of course, when people start deciding to not watch a show because
they think it will be cancelled, it's self-fulfilling.

videonovels...
Only if we don't have a Nielsen box.
Those without boxes have no positive or negative effect.
If you own a Nielsen box, then yes, please watch Heroes as often as you
can. ;-)

If nobody is watching it, of course it will be cancelled.

EGTea...
No, it's about you. You want to be the center of attention.

Default User...
And yet you continue to give him attention.

Normal viewers generally don't feel the need to make public announcements of

(1) I want to "part of" but not the "center" of anything. (2) What I
want is to talk to people, since human beings are social animals, and I
am human. If you can not understand the desire to socialize, perhaps
you're not human? ;-) (3) Actually, there are MANY people on this

Victor Velazquez...
Assuming this is sincere, I'm going to make two suggestions:

1) Be a lot less annoying.

2) Stick with one email address so those who have you blocked will not be

Free Speech. Think about that concept. It applies to EVERYONE even if
you don't like what they are saying (kkk or the communist party).
That's how America and the EU works. Free speech. Tolerance.

ravenlynne...
Nor Troy, this was never about free speech. You didn't post a review
of Heroes, you stated that you wouldn't watch it. Totally different
thing.

videonovels...
Not a review, true, but what I did post,
that I think NBC is cancelation-happy,
is still free speech. Still my inalienable right.

For whatever reason, you're trying to take away the Right.

edrhodes...
The "Right" to "Free Speech" only pertains to the government not making
any laws to restrict it. It has nothing to do with a group of people
telling you to shut up because you're not actually saying anything.

ravenlynne...
Prove it. Show where I'm telling you to shut up. You are ridiculous
in your paranoia.

- I'm fine with you not liking my post. I'm fine with you disagreeing
with my observation that NBC has a history of canceling serialized
shows (earth 2, surface), and is likely to cancel more serialized shows
(Studio 60, friday nights, Kidnapped), and therefore I'm not going to
waste my time.

ravenlynne...
Not the same as posting a review.

- We're different people. We think differently. We can agree to
disagree.

- I am NOT fine with you saying I should shut-up. That's an attempt at
censorship and anti-liberty. You ought to know better than to try and
"shut up" a fellow poster & forbid him/her from speaking.

ravenlynne...
He was only stating his opinion. You're trying to censor him!

And (4) If we follow your reasoning to its logical conclusion, then
people shouldn't "feel the need" to publicly state they LIKE a show,
either. Per your directive, stating you like a show is
attention-seeking and should be forbidden.

I can't believe you would take such a pro-censorship stance to stifle
the rec.arts.tv posters.

ravenlynne...
ROFLMAO....I'm sure you'll convince someone that you're a genuine guy...

what they don't watch. Most folks would be embarrassed to make a spectacle
of their ignorance and irrationality.

ravenlynne...
And then there are those of us who can live in the moment and enjoy the
show for what it is, while it is.

EGK...
I'm watching it but the original poster does have a point. The way shows

Isn't Medium on NBC?

Comparing Heroes to Surface and Earth 2 is like comparing apples and kiwi.

Troy.Heagy...
Not really. All 3 are continuing stories (serials/ telenovels).

All 3 are in the genre of speculative fiction/ fantasy fiction.

If Heroes is canceled after only one year, then all 3 series will also
share the common trait of being unfinished stories, with dangling
plotlines and annoyed fans.

like The X-Files and Alias ended really turned me off to some of the
open-ended series like this. I was just recently reading an article about

above the other two.

how the networks want Arc driven shows like 24 but it's a double edged
sword. If it's successful they can have a monster hit on their hands. If
it's not, they risk further alienating a dwindling audience.

Nowadays it's pretty easy to bypass something you think you might like to
see if it has legs or not. If Heroes is a success, the first season DVD
will be out by this time next year. :)

Bill Steele...
OTOH, if you have choice between two shows you like at the same hour,
always opt for the new one. The established show will be back in reruns,
but if the new one is cancelled before the end of the season it will
never air again.

videonovels...
I'd rather not take the risk that the "new one" (like vanished) will be
canceled and end with a dangling, unresolved plot.

I'd rather watch the show that survived at least 2 seasons (like
prision break), and is likely to reach a satisfying conclusion.

:-)

Also, there's no guarantee that a long-run show will be rerun. I can't

edrhodes...
They have serious potential, I love the bantering ("You even suggest a
mask and tights and I'm outta here!")

You have to be willing to take chances. I missed out on "Lost,"
(although it's rapidily looking like I didn't lose all that much.) I'm
enjoying "Heroes" so far.

find Babylon 5 anywhere on the dial. And the 5-season-long Alias airs
2 to 6 a.m., extremely inconvenient to follow.

cloud dreamer...
DVD and Torrents are changing all that. Heck, VCRs changed that.

Dano...
Turn off your TV. Read a book.

videonovels...
It's funny you say that. I just spent $300 yesterday, buying various
"Best of Science Fiction" anthologies from 1985 to the present. So I
*will* be reading a lot of books.

Steven L....
There are authors who continued to develop characters across several of
their novels, turning the novels they wrote into serials: Allen Drury,
Tom Clancy, Dale Brown, etc. You probably want to stay away from such
authors. Once they stop writing sequels that tell you what happened to
the characters since their previous novels, you'll be "screwed."

JV Smith...
Does anyone know if "Surface" cost more to make than "Heros"? NBC
seems to keep trying to find an offbeat hit, but they don't seem
willing to stick with anything for more than one season. They usually
cite cost as the reason for canceling a show. But what's the benefit
of having one costly low-performer a season. Why not give a show, like
Surface, a chance to build an audience? It couldn't cost them much
more than what they seem to end up doing every year.

In many ways NBC is starting to resemble FOX, although FOX seems to
be pulling shows much faster than even they used too. Two good FOX
examples were "Space: Above and Beyond" and "Tru Calling". These were
great shows with loyal followings and lots of potential, but it was
one season and out.

kaydigi...
Don't forget dumping Dark Angel on Fridays, cancelling Family Guy the first
time, and on the East coast showing the intro to Futurama - 3 minutes of the
opening plot - then showing the end credits - then moving on to the Simpsons
for a full episode.

lorincantrell...
I didn't watch Tru Calling, but didn't it have a short second season?

JV Smith...
FOX originally ordered a second season and six episodes were made. But
FOX then decided to cancel the show before the new shows were aired.
They did eventually broadcast five of the six episodes. I think they
did this as filler when some other show was abruptly canceled.

These six episodes just showed how much more potential was there. The
addition of the character played by Jason Priestly added a whole new
dimension. It would have been nice to see the conflict played out a
little more.

georgeavalos0...
BTW, Troy, the overnights for 10-9-06 are below.

videonovels...
.

Yeah, I was wrong. Heroes is not going to get canceled, and will
likely get to finish its story (unlike earth 2, surface). So I was
wrong. So what?

Clell Harmon...
Normality is restored.

Note that Heroes has lost no steam whatsoever after three episodes.

Obveeus...
You do know that if you convince him it won't be cancelled, he will start
watching it. If he starts watching it, he will be posting and replying
about it more.

ravenlynne...
you should open up a shop and tell fortunes. you seem to be quite
accurate.

georgeavalos0...
You're quite right. I well realize it's a two-edged sword. That's why I
thought there could be a likely upside to T. Hagy not watching network
TV that is currently on the grid.

So your original premise is flawed, twice.

1. It is foolish -- although in character for you to play the fool --
to presume that a show will be definitely cancelled and never watch it.
TV today requires that you take a chance or you might never catch
something good.

2. Absent a titanic meltdown, 'Heroes' is an overwhelming favorite to
in fact get its back order AND get a 2nd season.

So you're wrong. Again. But you knew that when you made your original
post.

John Duncan Yoyo...
Heck NBC at least gave us a season of Surface. FOX would have pulled
it ten minutes in. I never watch a FOX show until it is a hit. The
nice thing about the WB and UPN was that they stuck with things and
gave them a chance.

videonovels...
Hopefully the merged WB/UPN will continue that policy, rather than
yanking Veronica Mars in mid-story.

NBC already pulled the plug on Kidnapped... 13 episodes and end.

edrhodes...
"God, The Devil and Bob" and "Clerks - The Animated Series" didn't even
get that much!

seerialmom...
If you don't watch it then surely it will be cancelled. I was hoping

Only if you don't have a Nielsen box.
Those without boxes have no positive or negative effect.
If you own a Nielsen box, then yes, please watch Heroes as often as you

the same thing would happen when I didn't watch Lost or Grey's
Anatomy....but so far my plan is failing miserably because even though

videonovels...
That's because you don't have a Nielsen box.... nobody's tracking your
lack-of-viewing. :-)

Dano...
There are no guarantees in life lad...live dangerously!

edrhodes...
Is that the "Asimov" series? One volume per year? I have a few of those!

videonovels...
.

No. It's the Gardner Dozois series. It has a lot of stories from
Asimov's, but also Analog and a few other sources.

edrhodes...
The "Asimov" series actually has very few stories Asimov and
from his magazine since they were starting in the late 30s
and working their way up, year by year. I think I got as far as the 50s
before I gave out and stopped buying them.

videonovels...
In that case you should try Gardner Dozois' series. It starts circa
1982 and contains the best short-fiction of the last 25 years.

edrhodes...
I bought these ago. I haven't actually bought any science
fiction in quite a while. My SF collection comes from the library.
They're actually pretty good, I found a whole set of David Gerrold
stuff I didn't know existed, but they don't update their stuff as often
as I would if I buying stuff! They don't have the latest of
Gerrold's "Invasion" series, they don't have the latest Callahan's book
nor do they have the "pre" Mary's Place books! *sigh* But they do have
a lot of stuff I wasn't aware of and am enjoying!

Dano...
Very good ;-)

I watch neither one of these shows....they seem to be going up in the
ratings. FYI networks really don't "care" about viewers....they''re
only in it for the moola from advertisers. And if you're not an 18-49

videonovels...
Obviously. If the Nielsen ratings go down, the show get canceled, no
matter how good it is. The networks would cancel Shakespeare if his
show dropped below 2.0% of the audience, because such a small number of
viewers == losing money.

seerialmom...
Yes...it was definitely a tongue in cheek statement. Random threats of

ravenlynne...
Well, I'm terribly sorry to disappoint you, but I don't care.

"I'm not going to watch anymore" do no good if you're not one of the
Nielsens. Too bad they can't just get the data from the cable
companies; you'd think they'd have a way of giving #'s to the channel
the box is tuned to.

yo male...you definitely aren't on their "care" list.
