Just finished watching the lone season of Space AAB on DVD. I watched it
when it was originally aired but wow, it's so much better on DVD being able
to watch them all at once.
I won't argue with people over it but it was so much better to me than the
current BattleStar Galactica that gets so many raves. It was a crying shame
this show got canceled.

In retrospect the only real clanger is the dialogue, which seems a bit
cheesy and over the top at times. The pressure of a standard series run
caused a few underprepared scripts that could have done with a bit more
polish--they didn't have "x.5" seasons back then. When it was made it
was like "Starship Troopers" as filtered through the Viet Nam
experience; now it's a brighter and more upbeat BSG.

I've read that the WWII series, Combat, was the inspiration for SAAB along
with Starship Troopers. Could have even been the Vietnam series Tour of
Duty but that was also inspired by Combat.

The overall shape of the story was rather frankly a pastiche of the
carrier war in the Pacific and the "island-hopping" strategy.

I would agree that some of the dialog is cheesy at times but I wouldn't say

I seem to recall the dialogue, and the delivery thereof, in the first
few episodes as being real eye-roller stuff. (Waste of a good premise

it was brighter or more upbeat in tone than BSG. Just the characters are
much more likeable. That's been my problem with BSG all along. I don't
care for any of the characters. SAAB, I liked them all.
