The "Dad got hosed" commercial, where the dad complains because he
gave his kids expensive Christmas gifts, while he got aftershave.
What's that all about? What did he expect from his kids? They don't
look old enough to be able to spend a lot of money on gifts, or did he
expect them to give him a gift with Mom's help? I know he doesn't
think he "got hosed" by the expense of the products the commercial is
trying to sell, so I'm just confused.

Did you notice that the dad has a full beard and therefor doesn't need
aftershave.

Did you check out his legs?

David Johnston...

That does add a certain legtimacy to his complaint. It's not the
expense, it's the thought that went into their selection.

I haven't seen the commercial, but from the sound of things, his problem
is he has a bunch of thoughtless, spoiled kids!
|
|
|
It's the Principle!...
|
It went over your head, dear. The point was that he gave his kids
thoughtful gifts they really wanted, really like and enjoys, and they
gave him aftershave, not even remaotely considering the fact that dad
has a full beard.

I don't care; I just love the delivery of the line.

Also, we're not told the type of aftershave. That stuff can get
expensive.

It's about the Dad getting screwed by the impending cell phone bills he will
now have to pay in addition to the actual expense of the phones. You missed
the point completely.

I mentioned that but said I didn't think that's what it meant.
I don't believe I missed any point. It just boggles my mind when a
parent feels his children owe him something because he gave them a
gift. It boggles my mind further that people think he's justified in
his feelings. Yeah, the aftershave for someone with a beard... I get
it. ha ha ha. It still bothers me that a parent is portrayed as
spoiled as his children. What if he had gotten a homemade ashtray or
just a card? Even if the gift is useless, it came from his children
and he should be greatful they thought of him at all, at that age.

What does he think his two TEENAGE kids can afford to get him? I mean, its
funny how he says he's gotten hosed, but give me a break. They probably can
only afford aftershave.

|
Exactly. And, if they don't have their own jobs, any gift they give
him reflects the allowance they get from HIM (or mom).
When I think of all the wonderful bikes, stereos, and games I received
for Christmas when I was a kid, and then giving my dad a new bowtie
every year, I'm sure my dad couldn't have cared less about them,
especially since he already had a drawer full, but I was never told it
wasn't wanted or appreciated.
Now that I'm an adult, I get more joy out of seeing someone open their
gift than I do opening mine.

I can't believe that so many people miss the irony of the commercial.
Dad has a full beard. The last thing he needs is aftershave.

Companies don't care what the content of the commercial is...nor if it
really makes sense. It's the dad complaining all he got for Christmas
was lousy aftershave...while he got "cool gifts" for his kids. All
that matters are the products in the commercial being shown in a
positive light. In this case, it's the kids having the "cool
products", and even dad wants them.
That being said if you look at the content of the commercial on it's
own. Dad's complaint awefully sounds like a "him problem". Stop
buying your spoiled brats "cool expensive gifts", if your not getting
any in return. Of course though, you would think that goes against the
spirit of Christmas right? But who ever said companies give a rats ass
about that.
It's just another commercial that's shilling expensive products that
will be forgotten about by next season.

It's American nature to expect a lot from someone you got a lot for. If
it's an uneven balance, people's feelings are hurt.
Hey, just be glad he didn't beat the sh*t out of his wife and kids...
