(Wow... it's fallen on me to start the Openong Ceremonies thread!)
Could it be that NBC has FINALLY taken 18 years of Olympic criticism to
heart and changed the way the cover the Olympics?
They started off on a really high note just by leaving Katie Couric back
at the hotel and letting Bob Costas do the talking... a LOT LESS

No kidding. I don't know what it is about her, but I find Katie Couric
to be simply nauseating. I guess I'm in the minority, because she gets

Wow. You like her a LOT more than I do.
I guess I'm in the minority, because she gets

huge ratings on "Today" and could well end up becoming the next anchor
for the CBS evening news - a move which i would probably agree with if
I were a CBS shareholder considering the ratings she's likely to get.
But in terms of my own personal viewing, I wish Ms. Cutesy would just
go away.

The CBS news can just go away to, so they're actually a good fit.

talking! I couldn't believe it! In fact, they may have pulled back a

I noticed that too. I happen to like Costas (again, unlike a lot of
people, I guess), and I agree he didn't go overboard like some of these
people were.
|
bit too much, because I found myself at times wishing that Costas would
explain some of the stuff going on in the early ceremony. Why the hell
were those people dancing with cows? The problem with interpretive
dance is that it needs to be interpreted, 'else we don't know what the
hell they're wiggling about. NBC, you need to realize that when we said
we didn't like the inane chatter, we didn't mean ALL the chatter-- just
the inane chatter. You can tell us why those people were dancing with
cows; you don't need to tell us that they're made from 500 lbs. of
fiberglass, or whatever.
They've promised less annoying athlete profiles, but like I knew they
would yet again, they started the evening's broadcast by treading water
for an hour with annoying athlete profiles. For some reason, they also
showed us meaningless training runs. I know we viewers want to see more
athletic competition, but c'mon... training runs? The Opening
Ceremonies are a night of pomp and circumstance. This is the night when
we don't mind the little pieces about local culture and history. They
should have had more of that in the first HALF-hour-- NOT a full hour of
treading water-- and then, right into the ceremonial program.
