Friday, January 6, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate: SG-1, and
Stargate: Atlantis, have new episodes on the US Sci Fi Channel.

I kind of figured, with the Stargate:Atlantis marathon the
other day, ending with the last season finale.

It didn't end with the last season finale. It ended with
the 10th episode of Season 2. What's airing on Jan 6th
is the 11th episode of Season 2, not the Season 3 premiere.

So the hiatus was for what purpose?

That's just how TV works, pretty much every series out there,
regardless of channel, takes a mid-season break (or breaks,
depending). The only one that doesn't, that I know of, is 24.

It's what they do. Every year. They show some episodes during the
summer. They break and then they start up again in January. Lather,
rinse, and repeat. It's the schedule.

It's likely so that they can show a long run of episodes uninterrupted. I
prefer ten episodes in a row with no repeats followed by a hiatus compared
to the old-style network way of showing a handful of new episodes, then
repeats, then new, then repeats, etc. It also helps that by being on
SciFi, there's no danger of shows being preempted by news reports, sports
programming or other special events.

To give us all a chance to see just how horrible the big boys at the
major networks were at coming up with sf series so we'd really
appreciate the cable offerings properly ?

Sci Fi has been doing this for the last several years. They
determined that their ratings went down during the fall,
when the major networks were rolling out their new seasons.
So they break up their seasons into summer and winter
half-seasons.
USA is doing the same thing.
