Says so right here

formerlyfooled...
There is nothing in this article about having gotten married in a civil
ceremoney prior to saturday's scientology service which is not legal on
Italy.

Bigolhomo...
They've changed the story that was at that link. When I posted the
link the very first line stated that they had gotten married in LA
prior to leaving for Italy.

I was wondering why you were asking your own question...I can see how
top posting is a problem.
What a Charade!! Scientology service not legally recognised in Italy.
The are not even really married! I realized this when I was reminded
by todays telegraph.co.uk report:

Hartley Patterson...
"Scientology ceremonies are not recognised as legally binding in Italy
but a spokesperson for the couple confirmed: =3FAs is customary for
couples marrying outside of the United States, Cruise and Holmes
officialized their marriage in Los Angeles prior to their departure for
Italy.=3F

Tom Cruise is 'wed' amid stepladders, artichokes and stars

"The couple were led through the Scientology service, which is similar
to a church service but not legally recognised in Italy, by David
Miscavige, the head of the movement. They did not have a civil union
but their spokesman insisted that the wedding would be legal, leaving
open the possibility that they will tie the knot formally later."

As I suspected, this wedding was a PR blitz sponsored by Church Of
Scientology.

It was my understanding that the "officialized" announcement referenced
only signing
of prenuptual agreements between Holmes and Cruise. There was no
mention of a
civil wedding ceremony although that should be pretty easy to track
down and confirm by
sluth reporters or Smoking Gun.

Of course no marriage is legal until the civil matters, the paper work, (not
necessarily a civil union) have been attended to in most secular western
democracies. So who cares about the silly scientologists or the marriage
ceremony anyway. Considering the divorce rate I could never understand why
any one in Hollywood even bothers to formally marry - de facto rules! just
let the lawyers draw up a dissolution of relationship contract. Humbug

Guy Bannis...
They officially married in Los Angeles before flying out to Italy for
the show.

All this may just a way for TC to shamelessly get his "divorces
finalized" stats up.
