We know it'll be a while before nudity and harsh cursing will be
allowed on network television in the U.S., but what if the studios film
their TV series with the DVD audience in mind and then just censor the
series for TV airing?

I may be remembering wrong, but I think /Firefly/ and /Wonderfalls/
did that.

You're remembering wrong. They have "deleted scenes" on the DVD,
but that's fairly common. The question is regarding whether producers
will shoot scenes with nudity and language specifically intended for
the DVD that they know would be excised from on-the-air showings.
There's nothing like that in FIREFLY or WONDERFALLS.
The closest thing to that in either of those shows is the FIREFLY
episode "Trash", where the audience gets to see Mal's bare butt
as he's walking into Serenity's bay. Whether that scene would've
ever gotten on air on FOX we'll never know, since "Trash" was one
of the three episodes they never aired. The show *was* airing on
FOX pre-Nipplegate, so they might've let it pass.
It's probably been censored for Sci Fi in recent years. I wouldn't
know, as I've never watched the show on Sci Fi.

They already do that... note the brouhaha over last Sunday's "Family Guy"
episode.
