Sara Gilbert has joined the cast of CBS' promising new comedy "The
Class" as a recurring.

"Class," from Warner Bros. TV, follows eight former third-grade
classmates who are reunited as adults after years of not being in
contact. Gilbert will play Fern, an attractive young woman who has an
unexpected connection to one of the classmates.

Gilbert will segue to "Class" after filming additional episodes of
NBC's medical drama "ER," on which she has recurred for the past two
seasons.

Sheesh. I knew that. I'm talking about the latest bit of newspeak. Put
it this way: "Recur" means to occur again. Can a person "occur?"

Yes, but in the vernacular of the biz we call show (and note: my BA is
in theatre (with the "--re"), it's "appear," as in "appearance."

in the opening credits cast and at least half the time is contracted
to the show on an episode-by-episode basis or for short strings of
episodes. Often, an actor will come onto a cast as a recurring
character for one-two-or three episodes without an ongoing contract
and then prove so popular that s/he sticks around, eventually getting
a contract (Spike is a classic case of this.) Gilbert's ER character
hasn't quite gotten that status yet, but IMO, they've used her so
effectively when they've got her that they could/should bump her up to
a regular at any time. That is, assuming that Gilbert's even
*interested* in a longer-term contract with ER. Seems to me like she
really is trying to shop around for a sitcom (easier working hours
than a one-hour) while using the recurring gig on ER as a safety net
whenever she's available and ER wants to use her.

This past season, Gilbert also starred on Max Mutchnick and David
Kohan's comedy series for the WB Network "Twins" and in the ABC comedy
pilot "Girls on the Bus."

Wow, Sara Gilbert is determined to keep getting some quick cash on
instantly doomed shows in-between her regular ER gigs. She's sorta
like Robert Urich, but far more entertainingly mercenary about it. ;)
